I could go on and on, though it is difficult to think of them on the spot. I have no idea as to the exact number of them which are lain within the deep recesses of my brain either.
You should really check out this website here. It has over a thousand phrases and the proposed meaning for each. Some meanings have some proof of verification, while others are pure conjecture. That conjecture though is usually supported by sound, logical reasoning. Anyway, check it out.

Those aren't just "phrases," they are idioms or metaphors. There are as many idioms as there are English speakers. How many answers do you want to read? Hundreds? Thousands?
Anyway, I'll give you one that I'd love to understand the origin of - "Hell bent for collection." My grandmother always used this one. I understand hell bent, in other words, going too fast, but the collection part?
