It can be difficult to figure out what to do with the pet when you go on vacation so you have to make the choice accordingly. Vet bills can be financially crippling as well. Same with lifespans, do you plan of living the same lifestyle for as long as the pet lives? Will the pet out-live you?

Owning an animal, a pet is one of life's greatest pleasures to me and my family. They are a part of our family, loved and spoiled very much. I cannot imagine life without a pet. We own and raise Chihuahuas and they are the best dog in my opinion for the love, loyalty and companionship they provide us. For the animal, the advantage to them is to be loved, cared for, fed, vetted. They do not have to fight for food in the streets or be taken to a shelter and put to sleep. They have a warm house to sleep in, and friends to provide their every need. As for the community, there can be disadvantages if the owners are not responsible about cleaning up after the pets, if the dogs are allowed to run loose and attack other animals and people. If the dogs bark a lot, it can be annoying for the neighbors. Still, I think the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. I think the majority of people are animal lovers and welcome them into a community, as long as the owners are responsible for them.

Pro...companion, unconditional love, fun, exercise, etc....
Con: Cost, vet bills, food and treats, supplies, toys, grooming or self use products, training, work schedule, size of Apt/house, age of children, know exercise requirements, time to spend w/pet, chewing, damage to house, poop clean up.....etc....know before you buy........are you willing to put in 10-15+ years into this pet or will you give it away? Adopt a dog or cat from a shelter or adoption on line service...some are great!!!! Good luck!!!!
I have an 18 mos old dalmatian: large yard, treat her as a family member and she loves back and watches the house/neighbors etc....didn't want dog at first but my son brought her home after his time in the Army and we have her since many apts do not allow pets....she grew on me and I would not give her up......I feed her chicken/rice/cheese/veggies/yogurt/ etc.....I cook for her....she is spoiled rotten and knows it......many neighbors own dogs in this upscaled area and we enjoy the walks and meeting "friends" along the way...I'm a happy dog owner now!!!!

not many disadvantages except if you travel a lot..
the Advantages out weigh the dis by far....The ONLY Unconditional love in the world is from an animal--never from a human. The make you laugh, lower your blood pressure, help you exercise, never talk back to you, enoy your company always....
