I would think something like 9:45PM at the latest. No 14 year old should be out that late.

10:00pm at the latest. 14 is young, practically still a baby. He has no business out without a grownup after 10. Plus, there is probably a curfew anyway and the cops will either bring him home or call you to come and pick him up if they see him. If its something like going to the late show at the movies, just make sure you know what time the movie will be over so you can be waiting for him when he gets out. I am sure, since you are a grandparent, that you know all this, assuming that you have been thru it before. My parents used to make me come home so early I thought I would die, but it kept my little butt out of trouble. My dad would say "nothing good can possibly happen after 10".

Grandson! With his parents that might be suitable but you don't even know the kid besides family hours! I'd do 10, and then if he wants to stay up past that it is with you playing cards.
Much too you for 12:30, that will allow him to not come home at all when hes 16!

14 id say when the street lights come on.
16 maybe 10p.m. if he's resposible
18 11p.m. if he's still in school.
I'm 22 and have 2 kids I think I'm a pretty cool MOM but there is no way a 14 year old should be out that late. Not in todays world that is for sure.

if thats what time he is coming home a then he is definatley hanging around with the wrong crowd, any other responsible parent would be showing the same fears that youare here and ask for help.
I would say that 10pm is reasonable for a 14yr old seen as it's summer and it gets dark then but i guess it comes down the the consequences that it will have on him if you enforce that on him, will it make him rebel against you?
advise him that it's for his own good and you are trying to protect him, the world isn't a nice place at night if your young.
best of luck

In my opinion no child should be out pass 10pm during the summer and 9 pm when school is in session. Unless they are with a parent or guardian. Up til the age of 18, then they are responsible for their own actions.

I'd ask him what he does past midnight. If his answer is vague and consists of "hanging out with friends," you can logically say, "You can hang out with your friends at other times, too, (such as after school and homework, etc)."
Unless if he's attending a special occasion, anytime past 10:30pm is pushing it. And if he needs to go out late, make sure he's with friends you trust.
In addition, adjusting his curfew gradually would be preferred. Otherwise he could feel the rule would be too restricting. Let him know that you're concerned for him, and that if he wishes to go out past a certain time, he needs to display responsibility.
From my experience, the key is trust. My parents trust that I don't do anything "stupid" if I happen to be out late. Consequently, I don't have a curfew because they believe me to be responsible. (I am 17.) Regardless, I have rarely returned home past midnight. It's very possible to have fun before midnight...

I would say at 9.30pm - earlier on a school night. I don't think any child under the age of 18 should out until that time especially in this day and age - too many nutters about!

If it where up to me, I wouldn't let him out past 8.00 on a school night and 10.00 on the weekend. That is as long as he remembers this is a privilege, not a right. However, I'm a bit strict so I would suggest checking the set curfew of your neighborhood.

He shouldn't be staying out until 1230am. He should be in by 9pm at the latest and earlier when school starts. What is a 14 year old doing that would justify staying out past midnight?
