Before the wooden tees of today, people used to use a small heap of sand from which to hit there first shot on a hole. Does anyone still do this, is it legal to do, and if so, do people not use this method anymore because it has proven inferior? To me, it seems like a great idea for par threes where a little bit of height would be nice but a tee is unecessary

When the player’s ball is to be teed within the teeing ground, it must be placed on:
• the surface of the teeing ground , including an irregularity of surface (whether or not created by the player), or
• a tee placed in or on the surface of the teeing ground, or
• sand or other natural substance placed on the surface of the teeing ground.
A player may stand outside the teeing ground to play a ball within it.
In teeing, if a player uses a non-conforming tee or any other object to raise the ball off the ground, he is disqualified.

That's why tee's where created. It's more consistent than hitting from a pile of sand, it would be like hitting out of a sand pit to tee off every time.
Today, many Par-3 executive courses have rubber tee's on a astroturf like mat to tee off from.
