Not important. Before petrol runs out, we will have better energy solutions. Such as the fusion engine. It may be possible then to power vehicles remotely. remote electricity means bumper cars without the grid and pole above you. Unlimited power for vehicles means you can have electric motors that can generate 200hp and up easily. Just cool the system and dissipate the heat generated. The new advances will be limitless with gigawatts of power available. Terrawatts for a city or metropolitan ecology.

Where will you get the energy to split water into Hydrogen and Oxygen? Whatever your answer, you will in one way or another wipe out any gains from got by weaning away from petrol. BTW, the ocean levels will NOT go down. The water cycle will ensure that hydrogen and oxygen will recombine to form water and replenish the oceans.

Water would be sold as a commodity and the price would keep going up. Then of course there would be a shortage, which would probably be created to drive the price up even more, so the water Barons could get even more filthy rich. Then naturally There would be wars over who owns the oceans. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

water with a capital W - is that a brand name?
Seriously though, I think people are working on that right now, although the energy cell that they have developed is huge compared to the internal combustion engine.
But there's hope for the future!
