If you mean boil like to make a soup then boil/simmer (probably about an hour or two) it until the meat falls off the bones. If you mean broil like in the top rack of the oven then you have to butterfly the chicken and cook it on both sides until lightly brown with firmish meat.

if you wanna boil a whole chicken is easy, i may suggest you get the chicken with head and leg. so what you need now is u put while ginger in the chicken and also smash some garlic and stuff into the chicken. Then when the water is boil put the whol chicken in it and low down to medium heat and cook slowly. cook about half hour. Then take the chicken out and put in a big bowl that fill with water to cool down for a while ( arounf 15 min ). Then take out the chicken and return it into the boiling water to continue cook until another half hour. Then you can take out the chicken and chop, serve with some soya sauce......is delicious.

for your note : the reason the chicken is taking out and put in cool water and then put back to cook again is to make the skin look smooth and shinny. And remember dont close the lid when boiling chicken whole, this will cause the chicken head turn black due to blood clog.

Sounds like you want to make some broth or chicken soup. Start by cutting up your chicken. If you want it less fatty pull the skin off and trim some of the visible fat. In a large saucepan, use about 2 tablespoons oil and 1 tablespoon butter. Saute 1 whole medium onion finely chopped, 3 ribs of celery finely chopped, and 2 large cloves of garlic finely chopped. Saute about 5 minutes. Add the chicken and cover with water. Bring water to a boil reduce heat to let water simmer. It will take at least 1 hour and most likely longer to cook the chicken off the bone. Once that happens you can refrigerate your chicken for several hours or overnight, than you can pull out the bones. If you want broth pull out the chicken too. If for soup add your cooked noodles or vegetables for a chicken vegetable soup.

A chicken is pretty much done when it starts falling off the bone (mainly with boiling). I'm not sure of the cook time. Another good way to tell that it's done is no pink in the middle!!!

Be sure to cut up that chicken and don't crowd your pot, make sure you have one big enough for the peices to be loose in there so the water can get around them to cook them. The way you can tell if any meat is done is take a thicker piece out and put it on a saucer. Cut into the thickest part of the meat, if it is done there, it's done everywhere!
