A book! Actually, I would recommend a couple of books! Indeed, a weeks worth of books would be even better!

Kids that age love Thomas the Train, any of the leap frog toys, games and movies are very educational and the kids love them, play doh sets are great too.

I bought our dear friend's 4 year old (my son's best friend) his own backpack with his favorite cartoon character & matching lunch box (he's about to start pre school and has some food allergies so I thought this was a good idea) for his birthday a few weeks ago. HE LOVES IT! He doesn't take it off. :)

My son just turned 4 last weekend. I bought a Fisher Price Doctors kit at Wal*Mart for about $12. He LOVES it. And it helped him get ready for his 4yo doctor appointment. So it was educational, and very fun for him to make-believe.

duplo is great - the younger kids version of lego (I'm sure you get it in the states). It stimulates their imagination, very durable and great fun. I can't wait til my nephews old enough to play with it.

bike or trycicle, that is what i got my nephew last year. he is goign to be 5 at the end of this month, so here i go again think of something "different".
