I saw an undergraduate girl walking a new puppy of some tiny breed on a leash on campus. The pup was pulling and sniffing and running around. The girl was completely exasperated and said in an astounded voice, "OMG, do all dogs act like this?!" Yes, honey they do; that is how healthy puppies act.
One problem is the media and fashion industry hyping dogs as accessories (Thank you, Project Runway!) rather than animal companions. The other problem is lax parents who allow their daughters to buy into the trend and will buy them a $2500 yorkie puppy that will be carried like a doll until the next trend sweeps through.
I had a co-worker tell me that she was looking for a tiny breed puppy for her daughter to carry around. The daughter was 8. What a good mother.
When did society "become" shallow? Our mothers and grandmothers were not allowed to vote because they were women, and were legally considered property. Racially-based slavery was frighteningly recent in the U.S. Slavery in the sex trade is a booming business worldwide. Wake up. Society is not only shallow, but cruel. And kind. The fact that some people actually care about animal welfare is in fact an improvement in society (sad, but true).

There are people who take their dogs everywhere because they really don't want to be away from them. Then there are people who use them as accessories, like Paris Hilton. She thinks that the dog, or the monkey (she did have a monkey), or whatever she has will give her more attention and that is a positive. When her dog went missing it was a big deal, drama and everything surrounding an animal when she doesn't go to events to help children or the poor. Celebrities, or whatever Paris is, is shallow so we shouldn't expect that she can take care of a dog because it doesn't seem like she can take care of herself. Anyone who looks up to Paris as a role model needs help, and I think that it is individuals who are shallow not our society.

This is the only thing that bothers you about Paris Hilton and the example she is setting for today's girls?
She has been seen on the internet having sex multiple times. She is anorexic or something, her body is disgusting, but girls look at that as something to copy.
Bet you anything she is on crack.
She is dumb as a stump. So stupid!!! The attention she gets tells people it's OK to be like that.
The real question is why do we allow her to tell us how we should be? Why are parents letting their kids watch the idiot in the first place. Parents have the power to say no and don't so, maybe another good question is Why don't parents parent their kids?

Stop worrying about how others pamper their animals. If the animal doesn't like it they will tear at it til it comes off. As far as short haired dogs goes, they get cold easy and like the warmth of a little outfit. These pets are loved dearly by their owners wether you like them or not, and that is a fine thing for a dog.

in this materialistic society, it is expectable (not asserting i'm an exception, I too am a sufferer of such values). What i will say inspite of the incontrovertible fact that, is that i don't techniques in any respect, and am appreciative to those that furnish a powerful homestead for their animals, no remember if or not they convey them around in a handbag, Louis Vuitton bag, or gown them up with clothier puppy clothing. i could quite that than abuse, forget, and the different terrible techniques that folk handle their animals. the only subject is the breeders. at present they're catering to the prevalent look, one occasion: slanted hind legs on German Shepherds. even inspite of the incontrovertible fact that this definitely will enhance the prospect for arthritis, alongside with different issues for those doggies backbone, etc. breeders proceed to reproduce them for this needed trait.

I agree. What is potentially more disturbing is the newest "fad" of celebrities having kids - basically babies as fashion accessories. It's a sick world.
Makes me wanna go home and hug my dog!
