The sad truth is that no two licks are the same, so there will never be a proper answer.

The effectiveness of a lick at getting closer to the center depends on the size, texture, and moisture of the tonue, as well as other factors, such as the variation in the thickness of the candy coating, flash from the molds, slight errors in tootsie-pop-manufacturing, and even that weather around you.

Suppose you were licking to the center in the middle of the desert. The heat and dryness would keep the sugar hard, and solidify your slobber. If there was a bit of wind, dust particles might even get stuck to the tootsie pop, increasing the thickness. In a really bad sand storm, the flying debris might erode away the whole pop in a few seconds, along with your tongue. Meanwhile, in monsoon rains, the water would soften the sugar, and wash away layers, but it might also soften the pop stick too quickly, so that the whole thing would be lost.

Meanwhile, Mr. Owl seems to have calculated three licks, but his beak interference may disqualify him. Mr. speech impediment has almost no tongue, and will be hard pressed to lick the pop that many times without getting lip interference, whereas Mr. Gene Simmons of Kiss could lick the pop on all sides at once with no problem. Mr. Alligator has no tongue to speak of, and would be unable to lick at all, while Mr. Giraffe has a prehensile tongue that includes rasping surfaces capable of wearing away the bark layer from a tree. Mr. Snail has a very small tongue, but it too includes rasping surfaces, which might allow him to get to the center before the inhernet dryness of the sugar caused him to shrivel away into nothingness.

As you can see, everybody's answer will be different, but for most respondants, the answer is: "Oh, I forgot I was trying to find that out... "

properly there is no professional answer to this question, there are assorted variables. as an instance do you concentrate on getting to the middle only hitting the tootsie roll center or having it thoroughly uncovered? also searching on the way you lick it. in case you're taking biiiiig licks you're probably to get there in a lot less licks... My chum tried this once and uncovered one complete area in 268 licks. the fashion to locate an answer? grab a tootsie pop and start up licking!

A one... A two... A three! -CHOMP-

Um no idea.

I heard that in this college they did this experiment to find the answer, but I don't remember the answer. Yeah they made a synthetic tongue with saliva and stuff and made it continuously lick the tootsie pop.

Good question though.

I love how you said 'cereal'. Salad Fingers rock!
