I mean god was originally a way of explaining the inexplicable but now science can explain almost everything (it can, it's only the small precise details we don't know yet but for most things we have a better than basic understanding of how it works) and science can't see a need for a creator so there is no need for god. I think it is foolish to accept anything but the truth.

Science really can't. I think it's vice versa, that it's foolish to believe that science can explain everything. Evolution has not been proven true because the closest a scientist has ever come is producing amino acids which is a far step from a living thing and if science can explain how the universe was created evolution should be able to be simulated on a small scale. The chances that the universe came into existence by the big bang is about as likely as a pile of plane parts being perfectly assembled by a hurricane. Also, scientists as early as Newton saw the need for an outside transcendant force as the means of the universe's creation. Take his law of Entropy: Energy dimishes over a large scale of area. This is the oposite of the Big Bang which says a energy increased to the point of blowing matter into existence. When you have some hard proof that science can explain everything you can call it foolish. Until then I recommend reading Darwin's Black Box which systematically proves all the flaws of evolution.

You accept science at face value because that is how you have been taught all of your life, right?

..

For some people, the same applies to their faith. You trust in science because you want to. It's not as if you have stood at a particle accelerator to see what happens when an atom is bombarded. But you trust what you are told about the outcome, right?

Do you have life insurance? If so, do you feel that it will ever directly benefit you?

Many people in this world do not want to live their lives feeling alone. They would like to think that there is something greater out there watching over us and protecting us. Now whether they are right or wrong is something that neither religion nor science can really and truly prove conclusively.

So to answer your question as an agnostic, I do not believe it is foolish to believe in god. Rather, it would be foolish to completely discount something without any real concrete evidence to support you. A few centuries ago Europe thought that the world was flat, and that if you sailed beyond the horizon your ship would fall off the edge. Christopher Columbus proved that theory false when he sailed to the new world.

Imagine if he had decided to side with the accepted science of his day though instead of challenging it. The world could be a very different place now.

There is a saying that goes "It is amazing what a persons deathbed can do for their religion." Think about it. When you are dying, would you prefer to just die, and that be the end of you? Or would you prefer some sort of afterlife? Just because you or science can't prove an afterlife exists does not mean it is there. Just because I do not see you at your computer does not mean that you do not exist =)

Tom, I'm still waiting for your explanation of the laws of physics. After you explain them, you can then tell me WHY they work they way they do. Basically what I want to know is the same thing you are asking the theists, why do you believe something you can't prove. In addition, science is constantly changing what is believed to be correct. The introduction of quantum physics changed the views of many scientists on how the universe works. And many views are still changing. Again, I'm not a Christian and believe many of them go into religion blindly and hypocritically. But you have yet to produce any solid evidence against the existence of God, other than the mediocre claims on your website. Science is not an absolute, it NEVER has been, to believe so is ignorant. So please, rise to the challenge and explain what I have asked of you. If you can't, you are no better than the people you are attempting to belittle.

Any other atheists that are following the word of Tom that would like to take a shot at this, feel free to do so. Prove me incorrect beyond a doubt (I'm well versed in science so don't make things up) and I will gladly post a question stating that I'm incorrect about science and give credit to the victor.

It is foolish not to believe and trust in God and put every thing in His Holy hand. No man could ever say I no longer need to believe in God, any body that says such a statement, is indeed lost in oblivion. What we know from science right now is nothing, People who trust that science is the answer of every thing have been completely fooled. We don't know any thing about this Universe(We know nothing). When Einstein was asked a question regarding how much he knows about the Universe and what advise can he give to the world after all his discoveries, he replied to the press a beautiful answer which I shall write down here: He said that he doesn't know any thing about the universe; he added that the more I come to know about so many hidden information and unrevealed knowledge about our universe, the more I came to know how much more I don't know. Science is not the answer and cannot be relied upon as being the answer for every thing.

This question is whack. We always need God. And he did create the world. How do you think the world started? People say that two big rocks collided and made earth. That's impossible! And if it is just two big rocks than how did water, plants, animals and people get on earth. That's not a small detail. God made earth and made light, water, plants, animals and people. Did you know that if the world was 1% to the north then the world would burn up, and if it were to be 1% to the south then the world would become an ice cube. God made the world in just the right spot. You got a lot of learning to do.

There is quite a bit science still can't explain. If all animals came out of the sea, how did they develop lungs under water? How did they take their first breath? Why if all animals started in the water, can most of them not survive in the water since they ALL go back to water? How would they have ever lost their gills? How did lizards eventually sprout wings and fly? (you know evolution teaches that birds started out as lizards) Did the lizards just jump a lot until one day one was born with wings?

And that's not even the tip of the iceberg. The more science tries to push the Big Bang and everything starting from one thing, it opens new questions they can't answer.

Who says we don't need to believe? God was never a way of explaining the inexplainable. If science can explain that life first came from a primordial soup, just by chance that the right chemicals were combined to create something alive, and if you truely believe that, then try this:

Take all the pieces of a watch, put them in a shoe box, and shake them until they become a whole watch.

Now you tell me it can't be done? The same with combining chemicals to create life! What are the chances that just the right chemical combination came together? We are not an accident, God created us. And He wants us to go to Heaven, all you have to do is believe that His son, Jesus, died for your sins. How simple is that?

The way I see it, science explains God's methods, I love science, I think it's great, but it doesn't replace God...(BTW, the best scientist will never admit that they've figured everything out - they'd loose their funding:)

but really, the reason, I as an individual need God isn't to explain what I don't understand, or why physics acts in one way or the other, the need for God in my life is something much more personal, like the way I need my family, my family doesn't go around explaining the laws of nature to me all day long, but I need them anyway, for something much, much, deeper.

Best wishes.

I suppose if the only reason someone believed in God was to have an explanation of the creation then you would be right, we wouldn't need Him. However, those who believe in God know that we need Him for other reasons. He brings us so much more than just an explanation of the "inexplicable" as you put it. My prayer is that you may discover that and experience the joy in truly believing in Him and His purpose.

And here speaks the ‘all knowing’ wisdom of ‘Youth’: a 16 year old… tucked up safe & sound in his bed, without a care, or worry in the world… away from all the bombing, shooting, murder & mayhem in this wonderful life!!!

My heart cries for you, you know that?

The older one’s amongst us, may: & especially the Christians you revile so much would: take one look around us in this world and say: there has never in the history of mankind, been a more important time to believe, & have faith in our ‘Imaginary Friend’: or a time when He was more needed in this world!!

Open your eyes: take a good look around you… then find me a ‘Scientist’ who can give you the answer, & cure for mans problems (especially without a gun or a bomb)… when after all… they are only ‘Human’ themselves!! If you can do this… You will be worth billions… and more to the point… You will be a God amongst men!!

With all the bitterness, anger, frustration, greed, need for war: the hatred amongst religions: disease: starvation: etc, etc, etc… there has never been more of a need for answers/a cure/a hope!!

You can have your hope in science/Man/Yourself/& all your friends who share the same thoughts & beliefs as you… No problem!!

I, and many like-minded people like me: will keep our faith in the one who does have all the answers… & will eventually sort out ‘ALL’ these problems ‘ONCE & FOR ALL’ for mankind: my very real… imaginary friend… the Lord God Almighty!!!

I pray in Jesus name…that ‘one day’, you will have the decency to stop mocking those who believe: and be thankful, for those who have the strength of character: to have Faith & Believe!! But more importantly… that ‘God Himself’, will give you the ‘PROOF’ you so eagerly desire, of His existence… preferably before it is too late!!

But I fear that if He did in PERSON… you still would ask for proof!!
