I bought some super market brand beans. They taste and look a little old... what is worse is that they seem to contain very little caffeine. I can't seem to get going after drinking...

They wont lose the caffeine. Old coffee beans lose flavor. The roasted coffee bean will lose its flavor after 2 to 3 weeks (ground coffee after 2 to 3 days). This time can be extended by refrigerating the beans in air tight packaging. The coffee beans you find in the supermarket are usually old and have lost flavor by the time you buy them. I have found the best beans are ordered direct from the roaster on-line or if there is a roaster in your town buy direct from him. There are a lot of roasters on-line and i have had great luck with www.ccmcoffee.com.

Old Coffee Beans

I dunno about that man. I have some old coffee also, and while it tastes stale when I brew it... it does the job of waking me up and what not... If I dont get caffeine before I start my day, I get these bad headaches, and after drinking my old coffee ( opened for about 6 months in cabinet) I know that I dont get any headaches and perk up, like regular good fresh coffee

I would say NO, only the taste suffers!

Your beans may be old or had a small hole in the container to let air in to dehydrate the beans or take on moisture to make them a bit rancid........

Maybe. Probably.
Use those to mulch around the roses.
Buy some new beans and enjoy.

Simple logic would dictate that the caffeine will go away. But by being caffeine, it keeps its properties. Obviously this would be the reason decaffeinated is so expensive.
