Keep him inside your house for at least two weeks. It would be best if you are going to let him outside, to take him out on a leash for the next week or so, to get him used to your area.
Give him lots of love and reassurance, and feed him well.
Let me know how it goes!
Congrats on rescuing a cat!

keep him inside for four to five days dont put him on a leash as was suggested unless you want to have to permanently walk your cat,if you feed him well and put butter on his paws before you let him out for the first time so he can find his way back, congrats on rescuing an animal,i have 2 peppy and tiggy and they love their new home with jock the dog another rescued animal, the butter should work good luck :) p.s if he is a rescue cat he wont want to go back to his previous owners anyway

it depends on how far away u think its from and was it starving, scared, and dirty when u found it?i found the cat i have now and it looked like it was a long time before it had food and had been cleaned and it was scared of every movement when we were petting him he thought we were going to hit him so if the previous owner abused ur cat theres a huge chance its going to stick around cuz mines an outdoor cat and is still here but be careful cuz theres wild animals out there that will fight, hurt, and even kill ur cat

I don't know if this is an old wives tale, but it worked with my cat. Apparently if you put butter on their paws, the scent leads them back to the house. Also, keeping them inside for a couple of weeks is supposed to help

Keep him indoors with lots of catnip toys and ping-pong balls, and a very clean litter tray. If you intend to have him out on the streets, you will need to keep him indoors for about a month so he has time to recognise your house as "home".

Dip his paws in some sort of wet food so that there is something for him to lick off. That will take off the scent of the former home. It should confuse him, because of no scent. The only scent he has will be of your home. Also - lots of love, affection, and food. He will love you for it.
Thank you for saving his life!
