I have a small male who dislikes big dogs but I want to get a pug but I don't know which gender would be better. I know that before I get one I will have to make sure that they will get along but I don't know which gender.Thanks.

Male dominance is a real problem with dogs. Therefore, unless you are willing to get a very young puppy, I think you should get a female. The only way I really see them getting along w/o alot of fights, etc - is if you get a male puppy or a female. Good Luck and good for you on getting them both fixed!

If both dogs will be fixed, it doesn't really matter which sex. It's whichever you prefer, the most important thing is to introduce the properly. Be sure to introduce them on neutral ground, and if possible, immediately take them for a walk together...then bring them into the home.

Others have stated not to get a male because males are dominant and it's not good to have two males in the house. This just isn't always the case. Yes, males can be dominant, but so can females. It's not appropriate to generalize that all males will always be more dominant to all females. Also, if neither male were neutered, you'd probably have problems, although many people have intact males living together. But, since they will neutered, it's more an individual thing than a gender or breed thing.

If you are adopting a dog from a rescue or shelter, you should be allowed to bring your dog to meet the prospective new dog to be sure they get along before you officially adopt it....also, reputable breeders should allow you to do the same thing before buying a puppy from them. Don't get a dog from the newspaper or the internet or pet store...just not a good idea.

Good luck.

If your dog is neutered I would suggest getting a female. The reasoning is this, from what you have disclosed it appears your dog needs to be the dominant animal ie disliking large dogs. Females if socialized properly tend to be less dominant when introduced into another animals domain. Hope this helps you good luck Rookie

What kind of dog is the one you have now? A pug? Get a female!

is the one you have fixed? will the new one be fixed? those are the number one questions to ask yourself. If not fixed same sex if they are doesn't matter. Best thing to do is take your pup to a shelter with you and see if the one you like also likes your pup and they get along. If it works out then it usually will be a go. but also remember that your current pup is alpha pup in the pack behind the humans and the new one is the low dog or you will get fights.

2 males might be competitive between them. However, if you get a female you have to neuter them, otherwise you'll end up having many more than 2 dogs.

I think you should get a male. Females are usually pretty grouchy.
