I've never hitched & never picked up a hitcher.

I think that it's very unsafe to hitch these days & wouldn't advise you to do it even though you're a male. My suggestion would be to start walking if the bus is too late or whatever or call one of your friends to come pick you up.

In 1970 I hitch hiked to Atlanta to hear a Joe Cocker concert.
I hitch hiked a lot in those days. In the Netherlands, the people
in the car would point at the ground which meant "what is wrong with right here". Than in 1995 I need to pick up my vehicle 30 mile away at a mechanic, I decided to hitch hike down I-80 an interstate as I began I became aware if how dangerous it really was and prayed that I would get off the freeway alive. 35 year ago it was a great idea, but today you would have to be crazy.

One used to be able to hitchhike safely some years ago.
Now-a-days, I would not recommend it.....too many kooks
out there that will rob, rape, or kill you. Catch a bus or hitch
a ride with a friend (bicycle?)

Nope..never hitch hiked. ..and I wouldn't pick up a hitch hiker either...too dangerous, even for a dude. Your best bet...a bicycle.
