1.) How bad is the pain when one has their wisdom teeth removed? I still have em' but they don't bug me at all (plus I need braces to straighten them out first....do those hurt, too)?

2.) After my wisdom teeth are removed, I will have to undergo a SECOND surgery to have my jaw aligned. You see, I have an underbite and with the underbite, I have the "Jay Leno" chin. We had tried to correct the underbite as a kid, but it didn't work. Before I graduated from high school, the speech therapist told me to save up my $$ for surgery; Dad told me not to worry about it.

Now, I will be getting the surgery, though not for another 2 yrs. or so. Anyone undergo oral surgery and how painful was it? Is it as bad as some make it out to be?

Thanks for your help and opinions and stuff.

I don't like my smile at all. I like my jaw bite to be normal like everyone else's (of course, no one has a perfect bite). I dont have TNJ but every once in a while, I might experience slight pain in the area where my jaw meets my skull.

Having your wisdom teeth removed is something most people go Thru. I had the surgery twice, once for the top and then once for the bottom. I was awake and at the regular dentist for the top extraction. That was painful and I felt the whole thing. I don't recommend that. For my bottom extractions I went to the oral surgeon and was knocked out. I woke up and was fine. The pain I felt in the days after felt like a bad headache, and my jaw was sore for about a week. You also have to be careful about what you eat afterwards, and you have to remember to keep your mouth, especially the sockets very clean so you don't get an infection or dry socket (which is really painful.)

As far as braces go...again, it's another right of passage. They will hurt, but that's because your teeth are moving. I always took some Advil right before I went into get them tightened. I also had a problem with the braces cutting up the inside of my mouth. This is easily fixed by using the dental wax. With in a few days my teeth quit hurting. And, a lot of times after you get your wisdom teeth out your teeth will move on their own and you might not have to be in braces as long.

I don't know about jaw surgery, but good luck with everything.

I have had two wisdom teeth out, plus another tooth towards the front/side that had broken so a bridge could be put in.

In all honesty, yes, it will be sore and tender, but IMO it hurts less getting them yanked than other teeth. Mine were not impacted or anything... just not enough room in my mouth, so if you are having an impaction problem, that might be more painful.

Good luck with all things dental!

Laughing gas or valium as sedation can help to relax you - you won't actually feel less pain physically I don't think but could still help you avoid getting upset by the injections. Being gassed to sleep is another option, but I think they tend to do that only for more major stuff these days because of the cost and risks involved. Ordinary dentists aren't allowed to do that in the UK any more. They used to do it to minors a lot for extractions etc because they often get much more nervous than adults.

No pain no gain. do you hate your underbite and your smile now? Do you have tmj yet? Weigh out your pros and cons.. it will be worth it.. Just make sure you get all good dentists and ortho's to help with the anxiety of it all.

I don't know but I left because I was so nervous so they didn't do anything.
