I'm the only child, and at first I thought I didn't want a brother or a sister. But I think it is important for children to have a special connection with someone other than their parents, someone they can confide in. I'm 17, and I wish I could have that. My mom has four sisters, and she couldn't even give me one!

My oldest will be 14 next week and is always asking why we had to have her brother and sister. They are 6&8 so there is an age gap there and she was more than a little spoiled before they came along. I think if they are closer together then there is a lot less resentment and if you don't make the mistake I made and spoil the first one rotten they do better.

funny. my first born is 2 minutes older than his brother. he's always rattling about wanting to be an only child. well, that's not going to happen. they're 17. thing is, when the other one wasn't around for some reason, they would each be a little lost. it's still that way but neither will admit it.
my middle brother always wanted to be an only child. wish he had been.

I was exceptionally bent when my mother had my sister. I was 6 and quite used to being alone.
My son asked a few years ago for a sibling, but I was not about to start all over again after 10+ years of no babies. I love my son to death and wouldn't trade a moment of raising him for anything in the world, but I don't want to do it again! He's since adjusted to the idea ... and the personalized attention he gets.

I wanted to be the only child, but got a brother and two sisters!
Not to toot my own horn in the process, but you might just have a really smart kid. Most kids say "I want a brother/sister" but they have no idea of how their lives will turn upside down once that new baby arrives. Then they have to wait several years for it to grow up enough for them to play with. So your little boy might just have the foresight to see that another kid would not be in his best interest!

We did not leave this matter up to our child.
Our girl, the older sib of two, seems to be very happy to have a little brother with whom to play. The age difference is two years.
I am the oldest and I did not act this way.
Our family taught values including the idea that we are not on this earth to serve ourselves, or to be served. We are here to help others, to fulfill the will of God, to glorify God. What are you teaching your child?

I was the older sister by five years. Although sometimes I wished she was never born, I'm really glad she was or else I might have been some lonely, demanding selfish brat!
