c fig newton is EXACTLY right! It's High Fructose Corn Syrup, which is the sweetener most commonly used in soft drinks over the last twenty years.
The reason it's used, is because it's cheaper than Cane Sugar.
Cane Sugar is expensive, due to government price supports.
The REASON High Fructose Corn Syrup is so bad, is that unlike cane sugar, your body never recognizes that it has taken in all those high calorie carbs, and it never tells the brain you've had enough.

Sugar and fat + No exercise
Americans have been conditioned to want convenience at any cost. Fast food, fast cash, instant credit, express checkout and quick rewards are just a few examples of what has created a culture of instant gratification. A "buy now, pay later" sentiment that effects every aspect of our lives, including the way we eat. "I'll just join a gym, go on a diet, take a pill if I get too fat" we think, "But for now, I'll have the #4 Combo with extra fries and wash it down with a diet Coke."
Not to mention, food tastes pretty darn good these days. There are some foods, I swear have been laced with herion. I cannot keep Pop Tarts or Oreo Cookies in my house because I can't help from eating them!
Can I pay with ATM?

It is the culture of excess that the West has created. Food has become a comfort rather than a means of sustainance.
Don't get me wrong; I love to cook and love meals, but there is a creeping culture of depressed gluttony that is making people fat.. People overeat because they feel inadequate; as a result of overeating their weight rises and self esteem plummets, so they eat more to feel better about their life.
Fast food culture does not help; in terms of people who use their resteraunts, fast food places are pretty much maxed out. How then can they increase their profits? By making each person who comes in eat more. Large meals and the like.

I agree with ohthechemistry...its not so much WHAT we eat as it is HOW MUCH we eat. I could eat 1500 to 2000 calories a day from McDonalds and not gain weight because I burn more than that in a day. Its the '3000 calorie a day combined with ZERO exercise' lifestyle we have that is causing obesity. I have been on plans that give me up to 5000 calories a day...and I ended up STILL losing a few pounds because of the other side of the equation...the output side. I was burning off more than 5000 so I lost weight. There is really no mystery to it.
1) Eat some energy (food).
2) Either you store it (fat) or you burn it off (motion).
It is very very straight forward.

I dont think its one particular type or kind of food. I think it has more to do with portion size. Ever see the portions from years ago? At least 1/2 of the portions now if not a third less than the portion size now. I think that splurging on fast food once in a while is acceptable, its all about everything in moderation. Another contributing factor is that people seem to be less active now than they were in the past.

I don't think any one food makes someone fat; every food is good for you in moderation. Americans are (generally) fatter than the rest of the world because we eat far too much; portion sizes in the U.S. are way out of control. If you go to other countries, most of the restaurants' portions are about half of the normal-sized meal in the States.

I hate to say this because I am an American but I think the leading cause is ignorance and laziness combined with a gimme now attitude.I'm certainly not saying the whole country is like this because I love my country. But these reasons are why many suffer from this condition. And regular table sugar (sucrose)scores way worse on the glycemic index than fructose

The main food in my opinion that is making Americans fat is all fast food and junk food. It is too convenient with fast food and junk foods and most do not excercise.
