I am trying to start a business/project, but have received very little support from those close to me. Just about everyone external to my social rgoup is positive, but it seems everyone I know wants to throw theoretical barriers in, rather than be positive.

If you have started something in the face of negativity, could you please discuss and provide some advice?

I would really appreciate it!

Your friends are just trying to help by pointing out where the faults in your plan are...it's good to listen to what they have to say then figure out how to develop your plan to avoid possible future problems. Those closest to you are concerned for your welfare and willing to pointing out the negatives, those who aren't as close to you may not feel comfortable pointing out possible issues.

So, just take their constructive criticism into mind...if you still think your project will be successful, go for it. I've started an online hobby business and had realistic expectations before starting because I listened to those who were negative towards the idea. It's doing a little better than I expected because I was able to know what sort of issues would be involved and plan in advance.

Use their negativity as inspiration to prove them wrong. This is just the first stumbling block that you will encounter when striking out on your own. Consider the sources of this negativity. have any of these people done anything in life other than follow the path of least resistance?
Do your homework even with support it's not an easy road.

betty b is correct in many aspects - it is resistance to change -you are now a "factor" of change and that is uncomfortable for many people.

I did a couple of things -
Library found books about running a business, planning, finance
Night school, I took a classes when I could - made it part of my "job" that would help me such as book keeping for the small business owner, marketing, and classes that fine tuned my skills (logic, English, ASL, Spanish, woodworking, computer programing).
Got in touch with Chamber of Commence and the retired Business person groups, networked with folk in and outside of industry
Did most of these as I developed my business and still do. currently studing Japanese just to keep my mind "sharp" and learning
Hope that helps some

I started my own business many years ago. It's weird because in some ways friends want you to succeed and in another way they don't. I think jealousy has something to do with it.

Just put the blinders on and follow your business plan. If you don't have one, get one.

Best of luck

People are always negative in the beginning. It could just be jealousy, so don't let it discourage you. And once your business is thriving don't be surprised if everyone wants to be involved then. That's just human nature.
