I like Barefoot wine, which you can find at Trader Joe's for 3.99, actually most wines at Trader Joe's is quite affordable and tasty. Also "Purple Moon" and "Bear's Liar's" is good. All under $4

Affordable means different things to different people. Go to a wine store or a grocery store with a wine specialist (like where I work as the wine specialist) and ask them for help. Not to sound snooty (even though I freely admit that I am) most fo teh suggestions on here are swill.

Figure out what your wine budget is and then get help from someone more knowledgable than yourself. That's what they get paid to do.

Try Spanish wines. They are usually less expensive than other imports and are great in the summer time. Don't be afraid to try something new and don't limit yourself to just red or white or just one varietal like most novices fall into. If you don't vary your wines, you may miss out on something that you will really like!

Glen Ellen Cabarnet is good. The magnum sells for about $12. That's what we use as our anyday table wine.

There is a new wine imported from Portugal that the distributors can't keep on the shelves. I can't remember the name, but it's so unique that you should be able to find it by asking at your local liquor store or wine cellar. The label is blue, the wine is white, and it is slightly effervescent. Not quite a champagne, but very similar. It's in a regular corked wine bottle. It's excellent for something different!

If you're looking for a white wine, go with a Rosemount Traminer Riesling, it's usually less then $10 a bottle and you can either enjoy it with a meal, or just sip it. If you want a smooth red, go with Rosemount Shiraz 1999 vintage, around $10 a bottle. There is also Schmitt Sohne Riesling - which is about $8. I used the Rosemount Traminer Riesling and Rosemount Shiraz for our wedding last year, and people loved both wines - some went out and bought them immediately, others complimented us on them for months afterward.

Such a difficult question without knowing if you want red or white, what you're serving it with, and what you like (besides "smooth").

White: Robert Mondavi Pinot Grigio (Delish and about $9 a bottle)

Red: Yellowtail Shiraz (nice, standard red with good flavor, $8 a bottle)

And not to be all wine-snobby but if you're serving this wine to someone else (not just going for a good buzz) don't plan to impress someone by serving Arbor Mist or the like. Wine people turn their noses up at it and it tends to be very sweet so many people just don't like to drink it with a meal.

Where are you at? If you have Trader Joe's in your area, then any of their Trader Joe label wines are usually great wines for the price. Try a merlot if you like smooth.

Any of the real wine products from Gallo. (Not including wine "beverages" like Wild Vines or Boones Farm).

Many are less than $4, very consistant, and very friendly style for a new wine drinker. Plus, they are available in every store in America.

I like Yellow Tail's Merlot. It's usually 12 bucks a bottle but you can probably find it cheaper. Look for a Kangeroo on the label. I used to hate wine but tried this at a party and thought it wasn't as bitter as most.

If you have a Trader Joe's around where you live try their Two Buck Chuck. It's not bad for $2 a bottle.
