It's innate training of survival instincts left over from when they were wild pack animals.

there are various reasons why dogs play fight. From a young age, (few weeks old) puppies will play with eachother for either fun or to establish dominance over the other in the litter. As they get older, the play fighting turns into more of play with practice mixed in together. Once they reach adulthood or their puberty age, the play fighting turns into a form of establishing dominance. In the dog world, unless there is blood spilled, its either playing or establishing/enforcing dominance. Up until about 8-9 months old, the puppies still fight with eachother but also look out to the older members of their pack or family. You'll see them start "picking" on their own parents just for fun and to see how much they can get away with. its normal for dogs to do this until they are 8-9 years old where they just stop and only play fight with younger pups. Kinda like passing on the knowledge you could say.

It's a "leftover" behavior from when dogs were wild, and traveled in packs. It's sort of playing, showing strength, showing who is more dominate and in control. Every once in awhile, when my dogs start this "playing" it turns into a fight. The same one always comes out on top, with the other one in a submissive position on the ground. Never changes, always ends the same. But they still do it. Dogs. Go figure.

You did say play fight... They play fight because they like to play.. It is just like kids playing.. they play together and joke with each other because they like playing.. Dogs are the same. GOOD question and one that one should think about when one abuses a poor dog.. They are somewhat like people also

Dogs are a pack animal. In a pack there has to be a certain hierarchy,Alpha Male and Female. When dogs play fight their actually trying to assert their dominance over another.
