Yes, you can eat it, also if you buy extract it is in the spice aisle you add a few drops and it will taste like whatever you brought. They have lemon, orange, chocolate and a variety of other flavors.

I heard it is made form satin. Most people, and articles, argue that you must decide between a better look or better taste. The better look is fondant, but you will give up taste. It is not necessarily true at all. The key is to ask your baker if they make the fondant to order and do they follow the standard way of using sugar and glucose(or corn syrup). If they do, then they should be able to mix in a flavoring of your choice that will make it relatively tasty. The problem is that many bakers make really large batches of fondant for all the cakes they need to finish with it, rather than one at a time.
There is also an uncooked version of fondant that comes out with a matte finish, so not shiny, and uses raw confectioner's sugar. This will not taste good by any stretch of the imagination.
Remember, a fondant finish is going to cost around 30% more, so consider it carefully. However, if you are dead set on it then consider a few ways to reduce the cost. Have a smaller show cake and have the baker make sheet cakes. Then after the ceremony of cutting the cake when everyone can gasp accordingly, the cake will be taken away to be cut and no one will be the wiser that they are bringing out sheet cake.

I decorated cakes for 3 years, and I HATED fondant, but in the same instance it was really easy to use.
Fondant comes ready to put on the cake usually...so as far as flavoring, I don't know how you could unless you fold the flavoring into it and re-roll it out. I personally hate the taste of fondant, but it IS edible.

You can eat fondant--its sort of like play dough but it is edible go to a cake decorating store or on line and they have different flavors and colors that you can add--you can even buy the fondant premade and add what you want to it and roll it out

Most fondant can be peeled back off the cake if you are planning to eat it...and you can have a flavored cake underneath if you plan to peel off the fondant.
Fondant is used on a lot of wedding cakes and those cakes are served...I highly doubt folks are paying major bucks for a wedding cake that won't be consumed.

Of course you can eat it. Fondant icing is thicker and can be shaped better than regular icing. For it to be thick, though, it can't use as much sugar as regular icings, and therefore won't be as sweet. You can definitely flavor it if you want.

you could eat it but the person who made the cake would be mad because it took alot of effort and time but normally if they mess up the cake they let people eat it so yes you could eat it but it is more for decorating like a wedding cake in the store window if it is real

It tastes like a tootsie roll, so you need to decide if you want your icing to taste like a tootsie roll. You can use it for decoration pieces, but I wouldn't use it on the whole cake.
It's tasty but gummy.
