I had planned on nursing my son until age two. He is now eleven months and we are trying to get pregnant. I am not opposed to tandem nursing but don't want to nurse him until he is three or four. Is it very difficult to wean a toddler when he is still seeing his baby sibling nursing? Should I just wean him during pregnancy?

It just depends a lot on the personality and temperment of the child and what his reasons for nursing are.

I got PG with #2 while still nursing #1. They were born 25 months apart. They tandem nursed for 16 months. At that point I was PG with #3. I suggested to #1 that, since he was only nursing about once every 2 weeks, maybe he didn't really need to nurse anymore. He asked about his sister still nursing. I told him that one day she would decide she didn't want to nurse anymore. He basically said "ok" and he was done nursing. He was 3.5 years old at the time. #2 weaned right before #3 was born. Many times they will wean on their own during pregnancy due to changes in the milk composition and supply. (I think she didn't like the change to colostrum. I wanted to tandem again but it didn't happen that way.) She did ask to try to nurse a few times again after her little sister arrived, but she couldn't remember how to latch on when I let her try.

Another thing that you can do to try to help an older nursling prepare for weaning while a younger one is still nursing is to tell him all the "big kid" things that he can do that his little sibling can't do yet. Stress how "big" he is and that, while the baby will still be nursing, the baby can't have pizza/paint pictures/jump as high as he does/etc.

A great book for you to read would be "Adventures in Tandem Nursing: Breastfeeding During Pregnancy and Beyond" by Hilary Flower. It has a lot of great information about nursing during pregnancy, tandem nursing, etc. and also a lot of real life mother's stories. Her website is linked below.

your body will produce enough for both if he still needs it just feed the baby first since they need it more but if you force it and still nurse the other one in front of him he may resent your baby
