Depends on what kind of lifestyle you want. Honolulu is the only 'metropolitan' environment. Maui is best in my opinion. If you want to work then you can find work here. Unemployment right now is virtually non-existent. Actually the opposite is true. Good workers are difficult to find.
Rent is really no different than what you'll find on the California coast. It's less than NYC. If you want frugal accommodations then expect to pay $750-1000. West Maui you get less for your money. South Maui (Kihei) you have more to choose from and there is work there. Haiku and Upcountry you will get a lot more for your money but you will have to drive to work (but where you live is very appealing).
Gasoline is very expensive. You can find a Maui cruiser (car) for about $800-1000. Sometimes less. If you know how to work on cars then you'll get one for free.
WalMart, K-Mart and Costco are here. So prices are no different than the mainland. Shop at the farmers markets and produce is affordable.
You will save money on clothing since you won't need to wear much. You won't ever starve or freeze. The very best of Maui is free - less the price to get there.

i'm guessing you're moving to Oahu, this is the place each and everything is. the different islands are superb and all, yet are not as develeped as Oahu. yet i admire Maui. it is totally superb there. fee of residing is extreme on all islands. i'm at a loss while it contains how plenty a single mattress room homestead or studio is going for, I won't lie. Oahu compares to l. a. in some techniques: site visitors, city, a brilliant sort of human beings. There are super ameliorations inspite of the incontrovertible fact that in case you around the island. in basic terms residing on an island is different sufficient. For me residing in Hawaii could be slightly boring yet i does not desire to stay everywhere else. very superb climate, no could desire to rigidity approximately earthquakes, the human beings are superb (majority besides), sturdy foodstuff, etc. Oahu is the relaxing island for many reasons. inspite of those responses, do study till now you opt to make a pass.

Don't expect to live "mainland-style". My mortgage is over $2000. mo for a 2 br on Oahu. Orange juice is over $10gal. If you have a JOB, you DO need clothes. A car is esential , no matter what island you live on and isurance is among the highest in the nation. If you ever hope to accummulate ANYTHING and don't have at least a master's degree...live elsewhere. I was born and raised here, have family support in the way of realtionships with banks, car dealers, realtors, etc...had a doctor friend from Cali live here for a year...she had to live with 4 roommates just to make ends meet...she had been a doc. for 15 yrs!

its pretty expensive down here. first of all, cost of living is very high. new houses start at about $400,000, if you're lucky. renting an apartment can cost you too, some go for $1800 monthly. crazy huh!
and if that doesn't disuade you, did anyone mention that we get taxed on everything?! even food and medical! plus, our gas prices seem to be rising constantly.
well, its not like i don't want you to come down and visit. ;)
