honestly i would go to the bookstore and buy the book on nyc in the travel section that is by fodor's. i got it the first time that i went to nyc and it was great. it rates everything from sightseeing to hotels to nightclubs. it even tells you how to get in everywhere and what the prices are.

Here are some things that you can do near NYU.
Go down to McDougall and Bleecker, sit down at a table on one of the corners, and watch the world go by.
Go to Rose's Turn in the West Village.
Go to Jacques Torres Chocolate in the West Villiage (350 Hudson St).
Walk over and watch the perpetual hoops game at 6th Avenue and W 3rd Street.
Go see the Picasso sculpture in the courtyard behind 100 Bleecker.
Take a walking tour of one of the neighborhoods.

Play chess with a chess hustler (or just kibbitz) in Washington Square Park.
Walk up to te Forbes Galleries at 60 Fifth Avenue (at 12th Street)
See Malcolm Forbes magnificent collection of antique toys (it's free but only open during weekday business hours).
Walk down to Chinatown. Go in and out of the food markets there. Have a green tea ice cream cone at the Chinatown Ice Cream factory.

try heading to the village and check out "The Slaughtered Lamb" it's a laid back burgers and cold beers place. There's a pool table downstairs and dart boards. You'll find a college crowd as well as many locals. The food is really good, the atmosphere is very fun and there are so many clubs, very close by so once you've had your protein and a couple of drinks you can head on somewhere else. have a blast.

It is NYC, you don't have to ask where are good places to go, just start walking and you'll find them all! If you are staying around NYU, however, there is always something to do around Union Square (which is right close by) and it is a great area to walk around and find interesting places. If you are looking for a bit of diversion after a few days, check out Chelsea Piers (http://www.chelseapiers.com). Good luck, and make sure to put your wallet in your front pocket (don't want to get robbed now do we?) I almost forgot! Don't forget Chinatown, your source for cheap garbage and the best Chinese food in the city!

Check out Lucky Cheng's too, for chinese food, and kareoke. It's a blast. It's on Avenue A around 6th or 4th street... something like that.
There are SO many places around NYU, you seriously won't know what to do with yourself. I think there is trivia night (tuesdays) at the Baggot Inn... 3rd street between thompson and sullivan.

Have a blast!
