I asked a similar question about an hour ago and got mainly "You need to go to AA answers" and that's not what I'm looking for. I'm not an alcoholic, but I do like to have some drinks to relax. I do not drink to get drunk and have not had a hangover in years. I do it to RELAX. My family, nor do I, feel I have a problem so please, no AA suggestions or wagging fingers. I simply want a answer from either a doctor or someone in the alcohol & spirits business, etc.. someone who actually knows the answer! I am not concerned but would like to know what a safe amount is.

I have European friends and they say the U.S. is very uptight when it comes to alcohol consumption so I'm having trouble getting this question answered. I'm a woman and I drink on average 3 drinks a day almost every day. Sometimes more (usually not) and sometimes none at all. Is 3 drinks a day liver-damaging or is this actually a fairly safe amount?

"Acceptable" to whom? I'm assuming you mean medically. It has long been reported that 1 or 2 glasses of red wine (or beers) a day is actually good for your health. This has not been reported of liquor. However, I would say that this is a good standard for "acceptable".

Also, I think that as long as however much you drink doesn't get you falling-down-drunk, you are okay. You know YOUR limits so stick to what your body tells you is acceptable.

Now, that said, let me just say that my mother has 3-4 liquor drinks a day. She gets a nice buzz on daily. I consider this to be a "problem" since she feels she must have some drinks to end her day. She gets cranky without them. Just another yardstick for you....

14 units a week for women , 21 for men.

No more than 3 (women) 4 (men) units in one session/day.

1 unit is a half pint of bud/carlsberg
or a small measure of spirits 25ml (what you get in the pub, ie 3/4 teaspoons, look at the calpol measure!)

there are 1.5 units in a small glass of wine (125ml) , thats 9 units in a bottle of wine.

You should not drink everyday.

These are rough numbers , if you are small you should reduce the amount you drink. If you are fat you should also drink less.

1 is gold, 2 silver, 3 no good.

Once you get past 2, you're doing yourself no good, only damage.
