Takeoff speeds vary, but a good average is about 180 mph. To me, it kind of feels like an amusement park ride. You take off from a completely stopped position, and then you feel the brakes release, the engine rev up, and it kind of pushes you back in the seat. Yes, you can feel how fast you are going initally, but the second you lift off the ground, you can't any longer.

The thing that make the little ones cry isn't the speed, I'm quite sure it's the pressurization that's hurting their little ears. They don't seem to be bothered on take off, but descending seems to really hurt them sometimes. Some mothers have mentioned they use baby sudafed (or antihistamine/decongestant) and for two reasons. One, it makes them sleepy, and two, it keeps their sinuses clear. Flying when congested (or plugged up) can be really dangerous. I have a co worker that ruptured her eardrums this way.

You won't even notice what the landing feels like, because you will be so busy looking at how cool everyting looks from an airplane window. You just feel a strong braking or pulling, and maybe a little swaying. Piece of cake!!

Also, if you happen to be sitting near the engine, It works like a lullaby for some reason. It puts little ones right out!

Have a nice trip.

To me it feels great but the pressure in the ears can be a nuisance. I chew gum or suck on a hart candy, For the 3 year old, he/she might be screaming, so keep a lollipop for him or a cup with juice to drink from. Good Luck, but be prepared your 3 year old might scream. Don't worry frequent flyers know all about babies and after take off the flight attendent will be helpful
