Whenever I plug my camera into my computer it turns off and reboots. Can anybody help me as to why this is happening? (win xp)

My usb ports work fine, I can use other usb things on my laptop but not my camera (which worked FINE until last week) The same thing also happens when I try to use it on my brother's laptop. It will only work on my Mum's computer. I thought it was the lead but it isn't. Pulling hair out here. Mum has XP Pro, us two have XP Home edition. Reckon it could be an update problem? Greatful for any help!

Have you tried to plug the camera into the pc with it off? then boot it should recognize the new hardware and then try to get the drivers for it. It may ask you for your CD.

If that dont work put in your CD, and follow the directions, it should tell you that you can plug the camera in. then it will try to install the drivers for the camera.

I don't know if this will apply to you, but at a place I used to work at, any time I plug anything into the USB port, the computer would reboot like you mentioned.

The solution: I have to ground myself first by touching the back of the computer and discharge any static electricity I have built up and then plug the usb device into the port. It didn't matter if it was a thumb drive or a usb cable from my computer.

I know it seems weird, but it worked for me! Good luck.

This could mean that your camera USB port might be faulty. If possible, try to connect the same camera to another computer and see if the same happens. If it does, it mean your USB port in your camera has short-circuited.

If the camera works fine on the other computer, it means your current computer's USB port is faulty, try to get a powered external USB hub.

You don't need a 7 port one, it's just an example.
