what people seem to think, I am not against it but maybe the age limit of 12 might be OTT don't you think?

I think in theory it is a good idea but in practise it will never work.
Some 12 year olds are small for their age & others are 6 foot tall. I am sure that the tall ones will feel humiliated if they are forced to sit in a child seat.
I think it should be up to the judgement of every parent. Obviously small children should be restrained but surely some children of 12 are able to think reasonably & weigh the risks for themselves.

The great majority of parents already have the best interests of their children at heart and will restrain them correctly - this seems yet another example of the nanny state bringing in laws to try to stop the clueless and uncaring minority (which it most likely won't!).

I remember having a child restraint years ago, and would certainly provide them for my own children - I just think that, as you said www.yahoo, 12 is a bit OTT - I pity anyone trying to get an 11 year old into a child restraint in September! For those of us without children yet, I suppose it will be normal for them by then.

I saw this in the news when it first came out. It isn't proper child seats but booster seats. The reason is because you have to be a certain height to fit into standard car seat belts.

If a child is over a certain height then he/she will not have to use the booster seat.

I agree that the whole age thing is miss leading. It should be a height limit.

The minister imposing the rule said that he knew it would be unpopular with the kids but told parents to blame it all on him!

I am just 5' and no more which is approximately 1.5 metre what about adults that are under 5'.

I do think 12 is a bit excessive and humiliating for a child that age.

It depends a lot on the size of the child its not just the age which is a guide.

It might be better to have a height limit, rather than an age limit.
