Generally, if a dog is acting aggressively, it's because it's defending something. Speak firmly to the dog, saying "go" or "go home." Make sure you drop your voice, rather than raise it when you do this. Don't turn away from it until it leaves. Do not swing objects at it, or try to hit it with a stick.
If the dog makes a go at you, then club the s.o.b. hard on the top of the head with your fist, or if it leaps, aim for the breast bone. You can stop most any animal by a good slam. Should said beast get it's teeth on you, then shove your arm or hand deeper into it's mouth. Do NOT try to pull away, as this will make the injuries worse. Forcing the dog's jaws further open will leave them vulnerable.
Once you've thrown off their plan of attack, grab it by the back of front shoulders & rear haunches. Put the dog down hard onto the ground & get a knee across it's neck while holding the body down with both hands. Eventually, it should stop squirming and aquiesce to you. Now YOU are the BIG DOG.
Immediately dial 911 to report the incident.
I know all of this sounds horribly mean, but if a dog is in attack mode, it's not going to stop unless stopped.

Very deep, firm voice, command: "NO!" and "STAY!"

At the same time, make yourself small by standing sideways, and look down never at the dog. Do not run. Slowly, back away. Assess whether this is a fear-attack (mock attack) or an aggressive, territorial attack (true danger of attack).

Should the dog charge you, hold your ground standing sideways with eyes down. The dog may stop and just sniff.

But if the dog comes in for the attack (and it's rare that a dog will attack), you need to act fast. Come about to face the dog showing your full size (dominance) and in that deep commanding voice again say "NO!" -- don't scream it, I'm talking about a commanding voice.

Watch the dog, if it's going to leap at you then you want to side step it in mid leap and delivery a solid kick to its midsection while it's in mid-leap.

If the dog's an ankle biter, then you want to use your let in a sweeping motion to deliver a kick to its midsection that will tumble it end over end.

Again, command "NO!" and back away slowly. Prepare to defend yourself again if need be. Look for something solid and wide enough to jam in the dogs mouth should it try to bite you again. The jam-object goes in vertically, not horizontally. You want to jam the dogs mouth open so it cannot bite.

If the dog gets hold of you, drop and curl into a ball with only your back showing up. Protect your vitals (neck, face, groin, etc) and don't move. The bite will hurt like hell, but your frenzied thrashing will only enrage the dog.

If you are bit and the dog runs off, you will need rabbies shots. Another major bummer.

I would always carry maze, just in case but don't turn around and walk or run away, the dog will only chase you since you become prey. Sometimes, and I mean sometimes, when an aggressive dogs confronts you, if you confront him as well, of course, with no fear, he will back off. They can sense if you are not afraid of him and back off. If he has already jumped for you, get down on the ground and roll yourself up in a ball and cover your face and ears, if possible. Do not move (hard to do this) and TRY to stay calm because when they hear screaming, it only excites them more. Approaching dogs must be done with lots of assertiveness and no fear....remember, NEVER, when approaching a dog have eye contact, or bend down to try to touch them, or run.....move on looking forward (with no fear) let him come and smell you and then later on, if you wish, try to pet him. You can go into the Dog Whisperer website and ask this question.....this show on National Geographic has great tips on dogs and on the website you can ask questions. Good luck...and carry that maze!

If you are carrying anything, start making a lot of noise (LIKE SCREAMING HELP DOG ATTACKING ME) and throwing things at it (don't try to hit it, just at it - if wounded it may attack). If you are wearing a jacket, take it off and wrap it around your left forearm, that way you have a protected limb to put up should the dog go for your throat.

Remember that your legs are stronger than arms, but that dogs can run faster than you. Use your legs to kick with. Attempt the genitals. If it is a boy dog, that will incapacitate them like hitting a man's genitals will. It will really hurt a girl dog too.

check for a door or a building you can back up against and maybe get inside. You don't have to face an angry dog, you can evade it.

Stand your ground and if possible back away very slowly. Never turn and run or they will just chase you and jump on you.

This is going to sound crazy but I would kick the f'in crap out of a dog if I had to. I'm a big guy though and I don't mind a little pain or blood so I suppose that isn't an option for everyone. Sometimes a good kick in the right spot will make them run away. Worst case you may have to seriously subdue them by strangling, gouging eyes, punching, etc. Hold them tight as hell and get control of their head as soon as possible. Don't let them near your neck. If they bite you on the arm or leg suck it up and ignore the pain. It's either you or them.

If a territorial dog came after you while you were walking Say for example he charged across the yard at you.You should remain calm and assertive, avoid eye contact. Imagine a bubble around you and in your mind say, "This is my space." By doing this you control the environment; you control the momentum; you control yourself; you control the dog. Do not move backwards as this is a sign of fear. Do not runaway. It is better to ignore the dog and keep moving forwards as to show you are not afraid. You must appear and believe you are the dominant one or you will give the dog the go ahead that he is in charge.
OK after reading all the other responses i have to add this: YELLING will only further excite and escalate the situation. YOU say more to a dog with a single sound and your calm asertive energy than you can with a million words they dont undestand. Eye contact is also a challenge in dog body language. Do not do this either. Dogs believe it or not DO NOT premeditate an attack, they react.

Carrying mace is definately a good idea. If you spray it in the dog's eyes, he'll do nothing but yelp and run away.

Obviously if you don't have any mace, your next thought is to run away. If you choose to run, be sure that you're destination is not too far away, because the dog will catch you in a long footrace.

If you don't have any mace and running is not an option, get ready to defend yourself. If you see the dog coming and know that he's going to attack, wind your foot up and give him a swift kick to the lower jaw. If the dog doesn't back down, kick him again and continue to do so until he backs down or you can run away.

As sad as it sounds, kick it in the mouth. I am not for this or anything but I have heard that this might get it stop attacking you or bitiing you if you are in this scenario. When the dogs are pups, the mother uses this technique as a way to show a dog good from bad. A soft tap to the nose/mouth area. when a visious dog is biting, a kick or a direct hit to this area will bring back the maternal thing to their mind and might let go, or at least stop. Dont just this just for fun though.

Stand your ground, and do not in any way act afraid.Dogs pick up on that very easy and will use it to their advantage.I believe that I've always moved forward at the dog and looked him in the eye.A side kick or nudge I should say will give the dog a back up motion.Go out and meet some dogs that are being walked by their owners, approach them with your hand out, knuckles up, so that they can smell you.DON'T back off.Hopes this helps.

If the dog is big it will probably lunge for your throat, in that case you get a good strong stance and put one arm up infront of your throat in such a way that it can bite your forearm. When the dog bites your forearm you wrap your other arm around the back of the dog just under its upper shoulder and hug it to you as you push forward with all your strength with the arm thats beeing bit. That will break the dogs neck and kill it.
