Paper towels come off a roll, paper napkins are the folded squares just wrapped in plastic. Some people get all 'etiquettey' and worried about which one you use for what, but I use whatever is handy.

napkins are weaker. Paper towels are a step down from towels. They last longer. Unless u use the dollar store ones. Then there really is no difference except one's on roll.

Paper Towels are dispensed like toilet paper. Napkins are generally folded twice and come individually, but stacked together like a deck of cards. The are also thinner and used more often for wiping one's mouth during dinner than anything else. Paper Towels are used for picking up spills and for cleaning windows etc.

One is primarily used for cleaning. The other is primarily used for eating. Typically you also get a choice of 1 or 2 ply napkins whereas paper towels come in 2-ply already for the strength. Paper towels I believe are also made from softer fibers since you'll be using it to wipe your mouth. But if you're me, you'll use paper towels as napkins as well. ;)

napkins can be made of paper or cloth and are usually folded. However, one could always opt to turn a paper towel into a napkin. Napkins don't come on rolls. I make every effort to buy recycled, dioxin free paper products.

The terms are synonymous. Neither indicates a worse psychological state than the other. If the behavior is constant and of compulsive nature, it may indicate a psychological compulsive disorder called "disposophobia". OCD may also be a contributing factor as well as neurological conditions. Recent studies that I have read suggest that damage (from trauma resulting in cranial pressure increase or possibly even brain tumors) to the dorsal aspect of the cingulated gyrus (part of the limbic lobe). The particular aspect of the brain is responsible for decision making, focus, and attention to detail. It is theorized, but not currently conclusive, that this may have a large impact of ADD, ADHD, OCD, and a few other disorders. This type of neurological disorder could also be caused by infection or medication, but this is highly unlikely. The most currently accepted answer for disposophobia is sociocultural developed behavior or a response to emotional or psychological stimumli, as these are sometimes common denominators in patients exhibiting these types of behaviors.

Paper towels come on a roll and are used to wipe up spills, dry hands, wipe faces, etc. Napkins come folded in a package and are used at mealtimes to protect clothes and wipe fingers and mouths.

if a napkin gets wet it breaks a part leaving little white pieces of paper. that's if you are using a Square napkin but i think they are only different by how they use it like wiping your mouth with it makes it a napkin cleaning with it makes it a paper towel
