I am quite sure an all-powerful, all-knowing God didn't write it, because it contains contradictory accounts of the creation, and says that the sons of Giants married the daughters of men. It also said that Noah condemned his black son and all his descendents into slavery because Noah was passed out naked in his tent and his son looked at him and told his brothers, instead of covering them up.

Oh, yeah, and it says that God put the rainbow in the sky so he'd remember not to drown us all the next time he was pissed. As my 9 year old said, yes, it reminds him to drown only some of us at a time, 250,000 here, 25,000 there....

The great old tales of some of the tribes of the cradle of civilization are are wonderful legacy for humankind. No one person wrote any of them, and the people who wrote it down often added their own ideas, took things out, miscopied words, etc.

Of course the exact author is not know for sure, and the story of Gen is indeed known to have been passed down from generation to generation till Moses. Moses has been created with being its writer
