Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Jesus nailed to the cross by his wrists? So why do people who exhibit the stigmata always get it on their palms?

(please, I'd rather not get any "ur stupid jesus didn't exist" answers. that's neither here nor there, and that's not the question I asked. Thank you!)

In John's gospel, he describes Jesus' wounds being in the hands. This could only be done if there was a footrest or something similar to hold the weight (and there instances of also tying the wrists to the crosspiece which would help hold the weight of the body)of the body during crucifixion. It is also true that sometimes nails were inserted above the wrist between 2 bones and they could be drive through the wrist. The word "hand" has, on occasion, been interpreted as everything below the mid-forearm. Another possibility is that nails may have been driven in on an angle, entering the palm and exiting the wrist.

Personally, I think that the people who exhibit the stigmata on the palms get it wrong. Perhaps they are "faking a miracle" or perhaps they have "mentally created it" or are simply believing what someone else has taught them. If it is someone in the latter category, I don't fault them.

Bottom line: the human hand isn't strong enough to hold up a person with a nail, the flesh would rip right through but nails through the wrist bones would be much stronger and more likely to hold.

Grisly, isn't it?

As long as there is no "malicous intent" involved, I'm okay with it to some degree because "knowing where the nails were driven" isn't a requirement for salvation, but I do wish people would get it right.

I don't think anyone really knows whether or not Jesus was nailed through the wrists. Contrary to popular belief, nails through the hands is a perfectly viable way to crucify someone.

Anyway, in the movie Stigmata, the wounds go through the wrists. I have seen pictures of people with wrist wounds who claimed they were stigmata.

I remember watching a show about Stigmata on the Discovery Channel or something like that. Don't remember what it was called.
Anyway, yes he was nailed at his writst and ankles because the bones in the hands and feet would not hold his weight or anyone elses.
The show stated something to the knowledge that in most art the wounds are in the feet & hands, and thus the people who have exhibiit stigmata are doing so because of that reason.

Because all pictures I've seen of the crucifixtion show Him nailed to the cross through His hands. Stigmata is caused by acute brooding about the sufferings of Christ and the marks on the hands are from sympathy.

Its not real and the people who fake it, either consciously or unconsciously, don't know the proper way to fake. Or maybe all those people who slit their wrists in "suicide attempts" were really just trying to be fake stigmatas, only they can't tell us their story!
