~Way back in the 60's at Sheaffer's in Central Park in New York City. None of us can remember who the main group was but the "intro" group was an "unknown" band known at that time as "The Chicago Transit Authority." Later, they would be known as "Chicago." They came on stage and from the first song, they blew the place apart. People got up and danced and cheered and carried on...in the aisles, on the chairs, wherever they could. When the main group came on stage, everybody kept demanding that "Chicago" come back. They did. They played two more sets and the main group never got to play. They were the first band to incorporate horns as a major part of rock and roll. By the way, it only cost $2 a ticket to see the concert. Two months later, they played in NYC again and tickets were $10.
P.S. Normally, I would have said 1969's Woodstock festival. However, I remember The Band, The Who and Joplin. Much of the rest of it is still a blur. What made it so great? The music, the drugs, the people, our perceived immortality and the naive belief that we could change the world.

The Eagles- just last year! I was supposed to see them years ago for their "final tour" but things didn't work out - so when I got the chance last year- I jumped on it. it was the BEST! The whole thing - from the parking lot and buying t-shirts to the people - there were no jerks at this concert. The age group was varied, but no jerks - I loved the music- they couldn't have done it better! They played all the classics, they played individual songs, they played Tequila Sunrise (my personal favorite), and they ended with one spotlight only and the song "Desperado" Wow! What a night! I have been going to concerts since 1974 (my first concert was the Moody Blues), and still the Eagles were the best.

Castle Donington - Monsters of Rock 5 in the mid 80's. I used to live about 5 miles away & could walk home afterwards, so no driving because - 2 liter Coke bottle containing 1 liter orange & 1 liter vodka.
Lineup -
AC/DC
Van Halen
Ozzie
Gary Moore
other bands
(I think) a VERY young Motley Crue opened the show (they were on first or second, while people were still trying to get in).
In those days, concert venues only prohibited glass bottles. I walked down the road to the show, following a group of Dutch teenages, who were pushing a pair of beer kegs. Compared to today, those shows were really relaxed. Plain clothes drug squad wore nice clean neat (ironed) jeans, so that you could tell who they were :-)
The only problem was, we told one of my buddies "meet us under the Confederate flag on the 30-foot flag pole" (that we took in with us). There were dozens of confederate flags on 30-foot flag poles - we never saw the guy, all day.

Best ROCK concert, up until now has been IRON MAIDEN Eddie Rips up Europe, I took my brother, (15) last year, well what made it so great was that IRON MAIDEN was playing and it was the very last concert that tour, The Clive Burr MS Trust Gig in Hammersmith, Clive was there... Their performance was great, and Hammersmith was where they first started so it was amazing seeing them THERE with all they've done now
AND I'll see them again in December : )
BUT The best concert I've EVER been, until now to was Backstreet boys, Never Gone, October 2005, OK Not Rock band, but I had to say it.. and they Rock...
I had been waiting to see them live for about 10 years, and it was worth every bit... AND I saw the Soundcheck, ha!

Led Zep in '73 was sooo good, they were so cocky and rocked the house.
Zappa in '80(?) was strong and often funny.
Joni Mitchell in '73 with Tom Scott and the LA Express was superb. The album is Miles of Aisles, live, and worth a spin.
David Bromberg just last year at the Fillmore in SF -- brought Linda Ronstadt out of the crowd to sing ... back up!

Well it would of been when I went to Woodstock in 1999. It was an historic event. I got to see many different bands, I survived the mosh pits where people were throwing bottles and came across all kinds of people uniting. It was just crazy and I made friends from all over the world. The Red Hot Chili Peppers blew me away and I was only afew feet away from where people were starting the fires while they were singing. Some many amazing bands, it was quite the experience.

I keep thinking Chicago Transit Authority in 1970 or 1971 at the University of Connecticut. Excellent. All the music on their first two albums.

I cannot decide if it was Death Cab For Cutie or 311's Transistor Tour. Of course there are many others that I loved, but the history of those two shows stand out the most.
