There are dogs dying in a shelter near you. Why not save some money and get one of those? Do you realize that rabies is common in other countries? Rabies is difficult to diagnose in it's early stages and you could be infected, or your kids.
JUST GO TO YOUR LOCAL SHELTER!!!
Dang people, show a little sense.

I think people hear about dogs in other countries and think about them the way you do when they show the pictures of starving children living in poverty. I agree with you that there are plenty of dogs needing homes right here. Homeless dogs here are just as bad off as a homeless dog is anywhere.

Some people aquire dogs from over seas to show or add to a responsible breeding program. Perhaps a champion in another country has or sires some nice puppies. Or to infuse some origional genes back into a line - as with the Besinji. I have thought a lot about importing some sheltie stock in from Great Britian to go along with my program.

If you are only interested in shelter dogs, then by all means, go and get a shelter dog. You are doing a good thing. But not everyone wants a shelter dog. Some of us have dogs for other reasons. I do not have "yard dawgs" but have beautiful and healthy champion lines that I have worked very hard and paid a large sum of money to produce. That does not mean that I have no sense or am stupid. If fact, I have 4 degrees and know more about dog genetics, health, training, etc than most people. When was the last time you had one of your dogs OFA tested? Do you even know what VwD is? Do you know what breeds it runs in? Do you know why?
I have seen so many anti-breeder comments on here but would be willing to bet most of the people posting them have never gone to a responsible breeder and looked over their animals and how they are raised. I would also be willing to bet that most have not done near the research or homework we have. Having a cause is a wonderful thing but to force your opinions on others is not.

Do you realize that some shelters also have dogs shipped in from other countries because they do not have enough small dogs for all the homes available?

Good post KG, I am also tired of the anti-breeder comments here. I think most people just automatically believe the propaganda spread by the AR lunatics. Sheep. Dang people, show a little sense.

Is this really an issue? Is the US being flooded by illegal immigrant dogs now?

Makes no sense to me either. If people have the time and money to try and improve the quality of the world around them, then I think that saving a 3rd world country dog would be pretty far down the list, perhaps just after providing free hangnail treatment clinics in Rwanda.

Okay, you find me a Laphond in a shelter & I'll pay you the $1500 it would cost me to get one from it's native land. And remember, I've researched this breed extensively, so I know the things to look for in it's genetic line, and the most reputible breeders.
I want a specific breed, not a mutt. I'm not likely to find it anywhere in America. I am a responsible pet owner (have always spayed/neutered & maintained vaccinations), so why shouldn't I have the luxury of owning what I prefer?
Or are you going to tell me that I must also buy used clothes, furniture & other appliances?

Because some people want a specific breed of dog and one that is pure bred that maybe the better breeders raise in other countries. Its harder to find a pure breed in a shelter. Or they think they can give it better conditions in this country than it had in the other country.

And then they wind up paying a lot of money, which is always a GREAT thing.

I hear ya! Makes me mad that not only do people go out of their own country but want to buy expensive breeds from people who run "puppy factories". And here there is a huge population of unwanted dogs and cats in the animal shelters. Makes no sense to me.

IDK why people would go to another country to get a dog, although every time someone asks questions about a breed of dog everyone screams out GET A SHELTER DOG. Yeah shelter dogs can be great pets(my parents have 14 y/o shelter dog), but to each his own.

That also how I feel about people going to other countries to get kids. There are so many homeless children in foster care that need a home. Every one wants that baby that is going to grow up any way. I don't get it.
