Why dont you just buy a new hard drive for it? But it is a SCSI drive then you need to download the driver for it, put it on a floppy, press F6 as soon as the Windows install screen starts up and then load the driver following the instructions after Win XP loads all the rest of the files. Then BIOS will recognize the drive.

Because a C610 only has USB 1.1 ports, not USB 2.0 ports, you can not boot Windows from it. The BIOS of the laptop will not recognize that the external hard drive is present until it gets into Windows. Plus since it is only USB 1.1, the hard drive is going to crawl. The same amount of files I can copy in 2 minutes on a USB 2.0 will take about 12-15 minutes on c610's USB 1.1.

Return the external drive and purchase a replacement laptop hard drive instead. It is a standard size with a mini-IDE connector, so you should be able to find one reasonable priced at a "real" computer store (might be 25% more than a desktop would be).
