Just be there for him. If he wants to talk, let him talk. If he just wants to sit around, sit around with him.

Let him know you are there for him. Do not say things like "it is for the best", or "you'll get over it", or "it is God's will".

Tell him you are so sorry and to please let you know what you can do to help him through this difficult time. Things will get worse in the weeks ahead when the reality of it all hits him. Then relatives and friends will have left and he will be alone. That is when he will need you the most.
