I would go with Windows XP if you need one now, or wait for Windows Vista.
The Mac OS X is great, but there's just not enough offered for that OS for me to recommend it. Your choices are practically endless with a Windows-based system. In addition, you don't have to purchase Apple hardware, which can be more expensive to replace, repair, or upgrade.
The argument that Linux and/or OS X is more stable is a misleading one. The reason why some users have less problems is because there are less vulnerabilities out there for both. Viruses, trojans, spyware, etc., are more common on Windows-based PC's. However, the tradeoff with going with Linux, for example, is a lot less driver support for both hardware and software. You need to be experienced in some cases when it comes to adding new hardware, and in many cases, you have to buy specific brands or models that have the driver support in Linux already.

They are all one of a kind, present one of a kind professionals and cons, and fill one of a kind demands for one of a kind folks. For instance, Gamers have one of a kind demands than Podcasters, Graphics Designers, and many others. I in my opinion think that the first-rate working method is the person who you LIKE to make use of and that meets ALL your demands. That is the backside line. Try Vista (and XP?) at a a pal's apartment, the library or a nearby laptop retailer. Try OS X on the nearest Apple Store. Ask tons of questions, peculiarly approximately software and hardware compatibility disorders. Download and burn a loose Linux Live CD, like Linux Mint, you'll check out it with out putting in for your tough force. Then, best you'll come to a decision which one is first-rate for you. TIP: You can purchase a loaded MAC Mini for approximately $six hundred, so do not concentrate while others let you know Apple is extra high priced than Windows while MS-Office is integrated (now not a Trial variant). Neo-Office is loose on OS X.

The guy above my post is correct, it really depends on what you want to do....
Both operating system you mentioned, require two different sets of hardware...... And neither is compatible with the other... Although, you can run Windows XP with a MAC using an emulator like Virtual PC, but I doubt you can run OSX with a PC based hardware.
If you like playing computer games, get into programming, or want access to tons of software programs then go with Windows XP (PC-Based)...
If you like cool looks and graphic designs and an operating system less vulnerable to viruses and spywares attacks then go with a MAC.

It depends. If you want heavy software developmental tools to be used then go or Windows XP.
If you're looking for a visual treat go for a MAC.
Good luck.
