Well, First of all what does you being 18 have to do with any of this. People of all ages own dogs.
If I were you and needed a companion for another dog I would go to the SPCA shelter and take a look. They like that. being picked up and held and they appreciate it greatly. They have a chance at a life but only if you help them.
Find one that you like and likes you. Smile and enjoy. I know the dog will do the same for you!!

Your best bet is to research toy breeds which can be done easily on line or at your local library. Research is key to find a small little pal that will melt your heart instead of drive you crazy don't always go by what others say, although helpful we aren't you and know what YOU like. Borders bookstore sells an excellent book "Encyclopedia of Dog breeds" I highly recommend it is informative and reasonably priced. After you narrowed the breed down than explore on line rescue groups of the breed you want a great one is
petfinder.com
1800adoptapet.com
or check your local shelter, Good luck with your search Dogs are Great!!

I have a Jack Russell Terrier (the AKC calls them Parson Russell Terriers now) and IO love him. He is a small energetic dog that is a blast. Be advised, they take longer than average to house train, and need lots of play. but they also have a reputation as healthy dogs, whereas some small dogs have issues with kidney function and diabetes (my sis in law had a Maltese that died suddenly from this).

small breeds:
Chihuahua, dachsunds, pomerianian, min pins, jack russel terriers, rat terriers (this breed is loads of fun but they growl a lot and wag their tails at the same time), shih tzu, maltese, malti poos, cairn terriers, mini schnauzers look like old men, poodles, laso ahpso, peekapoos, and fice,(remember the dog in all the Ernest Goes To... movies).
My mom has chihuahuas the toy breeds, hers are really sweet and calm. I have a mini dachi and I called her winnie, I miss my rat terrier, he'd run the treadmill with me, and is the most loyal thing you could ever own. Lasos are quiet and rarely bark. Another small dog but expensive is a Chinese Crested, They don't bark and nor do they really shed since they are pretty hairless. They have a 'mane' and tufts of hair on their tails and toes. Bichon Frise doesnt' shed either.

Hey there! A Pom is one of the smaller best dogs that I have ever seen. I do not actually like dogs, especially small dogs but when I took care of a Pom for about a week, I was very impressed. They are very intelligent and very cute. You will not only be happy with it but you will be proud to be seen with it because it is so beautiful. (Whatever you do, don't get a chihuahua, they are nothing but problems.)

You should match personalities not size when looking for another pet. If your current dog is active, find an active dog, if your dog is laid-back find a laid-back dog. Size would only matter if you had tiny dog, which may not be a good idea paired with a great dane.

I have a mini dachshund and two chihuahuas and they get along quite well. It depends on the dog and how they are brought together. I would take my dog to meet it's new friend on neutral ground and see if they respond to each other. If you bring a new dog into your dog's territory, it could cause a problem and you would not be able to judge if they will get along.
