Good grief! How do I summarise 156 years of history briefly. Part of the problem is that international and European relations at the time mean that one cannot study the UK in Isolation. If you are really interested I recommend the Oxford series Of British History or anything by AJP Taylor; Merrimans History of Europe is also quite good though a little oversimplified. But basically it is this: Colonialisation, escalation of military power, innovation, development of increased Human Rights, War, increase of parliamentary and democratic power (with many exceptions (e.g. Ireland).

We learn about britains role in empire and in ww2, and being scottish we learn about our clan history. The upshot is that history is a tool by which we can understand the world we live in now as it was born from the ideals of our forefathers. It allows us to see that greed for power is the genesis of all human war, and that nothing has changed, but we can try and stand back a little bit from current events and look at them with an eye to history past and present and not be lost in the moment. We can get a feel for where we are headed because of the journey we have taken. We can learn to be analytic and dispassionate about events, seeing them through the eyes of whoever is on the winning side or through our own eyes, opened with understanding and wisdom.

We did different things in different years. For higher, we did welfare in Britain 1906 - 1951, appeasement and the road to WW 2 and Russia 1905-1920s (the revolutions).
