Sometimes an enlarged spleen is caused by something else going on in your body. In this case that particular cause would be treated. Removal may be necessary in some cases, but not all as removal can cause increased susceptibility to infection. Radation therapy is also sometimes used to shrink the spleen.

The spleen destroys damaged blood cells. If the spleen is functioning excessively, it has to be removed. If low platelets are due to excessive destruction by the spleen, then splenectomy is the answer. Before surgery, she will have to be given certain vaccines to protect her from infection.
