Dog house for husky...?

Does anyone know where I can find a good dog house design for a Siberian Husky? I know they like to lay on top of their houses as well as inside of them so I wanted to make one with a flat top. I don't quite trust my own designing skills and wanted to go off of some professional instructions.

Ok... I wasn't talking about a dog house to "chain my dog to". I just want to build a house so he can get out of the shade if he wants, away from my terrorist 3 year old.

You don't want a FLAT roof -- you need to have some slope for drainage.

The basic design is simply a box with one wall lower than the opposite wall, and the two connecting walls tapered to match. You want the roof to extend past the walls at least on the low side and on the side where the entrance is located. Having the roof extend beyond the walls on all four sides is generally easier and more attractive.

If you live in a cold or windy climate, pay particular attention to the "inside view" photo on the doghouseplans.com website. This is a good example of how to provide an area that is protected from the wind where the dog's own natural body heat will help keep it warm.

On the other hand, if you live in a hot climate, you need to be more concerned about PROVIDING cross ventilation to get better cooling. (In some areas you may need to include both features - which would require a larger doghouse.)

One other alternative is to consider one of the commercially available doghouses (almost all of which have peaked or domed roofs) plus a plastic outdoor table over it. This provides shade for the doghouse in summer, shields it from rain/snow in winter, and a good place for the dog to lie on top. (You would need to trim the table legs or dig a small hole for each leg to lower the table to just over the roof of the doghouse).

My husky rarely went in the dog house. She made a snow bed and dug into it for warmth. Then curled her tail over her snout and was comfortable as can be.

But she did use the one we built for her on occassion. Standard dog house design -- nothing fancy, peaked roof.

With my old Husky we build a house...big house with a porch for him to lay on rather than the roof...the many thing is to make sure it is off the ground...meaning...take a 2x4 and that hold its off the ground...dont ever make anything wood and lay it right on the ground...that doesn't leave any air under the house...Good Luck

we just built a standard dog house for our husky. He liked it inside but did not like any blankets or such in the house. it had a sloped roof so he didnt lay on it but he did stand on it trying to get closer to the squirells.

Actually there are a few ODD-BALL places that might offer you a place to get started on a good do-it-yourself dog house. Boy Scout manuals will often have projects, I know they have a design or two for rabbit hutches, 4H may also have something in its literature, also check On line or at your local library.
