A persons life can be ruined or ended in a split second, but how do we do the opposite? What ways can we help people and leave this world a better place than we found it? What have you done to help people less fortunate than yourself? (Please no religious answers, they do my head in, i'm after practical suggestions)

I work in nursing homes. Many people there have never had a visitor. Maybe you could volunteer to visit. Just read to them, or comment on the news. Ask them what they think, or what they did for a living, because many feel like they no longer matter.
