Or is there a separate step for cleaning the inside of brass? I normally soak them in soapy water.

Walnut will work better, and last longer, for cleaning. However, the insides, especially on small caliber cases, will take forever to clean, and it will never look as good as the outside. Cleaning the inside isn't super important anyway. There are ultrasonic cleaning systems that clean all the brass, but again, the inside isn't super important for accuracy, and you can't see it, so it's not that important. The walnut will clean the heavy stuff out, which is good enough.

It cleans the inside too if you leave it in long enough.
