Doctors use the term "pica" for craving, chewing, or eating a substance that is not considered a food. Ice is the most common of these substances; other examples include clay, cornstarch, and paper. Young children may have a compulsive craving for dirt or sand as part of pica.
Some people develop pica when their blood levels of iron drop low enough to cause anemia. The reason for this isn’t clear, but this connection between pica and iron deficiency anemia is strong enough that most doctors will check a blood count and iron levels if a patient develops a new craving for ice, clay or other chalky substances.
Women crave ice more than men, perhaps because low iron states are much more common in women. Assuming a person's iron levels turn out to be normal, the craving for ice may be a reaction to having a persistently dry mouth.
Another possible explanation for adults having pica may be related to positive sensations from the texture or temperature of the substance inside the mouth. Although not scientifically proven, this seems like a logical theory for craving ice.

When people crave certian things that are non-food substances, like ice, it's called pica. There have been reports that say the craving of ice is from iron-deficiency anemia. Anemia is when your body does not have enough hemoglobin (the oxygen carrying molecule in your blood) or enough hemoglobin that is functional. Hemoglobin needs iron so oxygen will "stick" to it, so if you don't have enough iron, your body doesn't have enough functional hemoglobin, thus it cannot deliver enough oxygen to the other tissues of the body. And sometimes, this kind of anemia will cause you to crave ice.

Low on Iron. Need water. Pregant. I love ice and I am always eating it. I ate it twice as much when I pg with my kids. I am sure that it has something to do with the Iron. But there are lots of reasons those are just the ones that I ate ice for.

Maybe your body is dehydrated and needs water and that is its way of telling you. Or, maybe you just crave it, because when I eat ice its hard to stop!

Lots of women crave ice. I'm the same way about fruits. Ice is something that mostly pregnant women crave. It can also be your body's way of dealing with your stress

I've never had an ice addiction, but my guy seems to be addicted to chomping on ice. Ergh... I hate that sound anymore.
As for you, I've never heard anyone else who really felt they had to have it. I doubt it is a bad thing, though. Eating/sipping on ice will up your metabolism, but if you crunch a lot of it your teeth may suffer after a while.

Maybe if you have to much ice cream you just get addicted to it and can't stop. It's kind of like people get addicted to drugs. It's just that ice cream can only hurt you in weight. Either way stay hidrated.

Yikes! A craving for ice means your body is lacking in iron.
