I am an infant/ toddler teacher and I would say between the ages of 1-1 1/2. What you can do is just give them a spoon at mealtime-they will pick up on what to do with it by watching others eat with untensils. However give your child a spoon to use until he/she is used to holding it and controlling it becasue they could hurt themselves with a fork as their fine motor skills are still developing. Hope this helps!!!

i started giving my son a fork and spoon as soon as i gave him finger foods for him to eat by himself in his high chair. that was around 10 months? i can't really remember. he's almost 2 now and does really well with a spoon, but not so well with a fork. he tries to tip it into his mouth. he's pretty dedicated about the whole thing - he wants to do everything the exact way his daddy does.
my nephew on the other hand was barely mastering the spoon/fork thing by 3. he is also a very picky eater - both in how he ate and what he ate, so he isn't all that into the utensils.

We tried with our older son giving him a toddlers fork and spoon starting at about a year old. He didn't do really well with it. When he was about 18 months, he got better. Right at about 24 months, we tried giving him an adult fork (we give him a salad fork) and he does well with it. Very little mess anymore, and he's becoming the master at stabbing food and scooping it up. (He's 29 months old now, and refuses to use a "baby" fork.) :)

My almost 2yr old seems to do better with a fork vs. a spoon. I will show him during meal time how to stab his green beans or whatever have you with it and he immitates me by doing the same. I too don't use those plastic spoons and forks they just frustrate my toddler. I give him the big boy forks and spoons and he does just fine.

My son was feeding himself at 1 yr. old.
Forget those crazy plastic forks and spoons that are designed to prevent spillage, the ones with the bent handles. They are more trouble than they are worth.
We had a nice, small set of regular silverware for him, and he did just fine. The important part is sitting down and eating with your child, so they will want to immitate what you are doing. Good luck!

my son tried to eat with a small fork and spoon when he was a little over a year. He couldn't successfully do it until he was almost two. He's two now and can pick up food with his spoon, but still gets irritated with his fork when food falls off.
