It is not a cult. I am a Christian and really all to explain is this.
There was once this great healer dude named Jesus. His mother was the virgin Mary. Hours before his death he was whipped, embedding glass and other horrible things into his back. He survived it. They made him carry his murder weapon (the cross) to where he would 'die'. They nailed his wrists and ankles to the cross. This made every breath make him bleed mroe and more. Right before he died he screamed "Father, why have you forsaken me?!?! They know not what they are doing." These are not the exact words but close enough. Before he died he thought of every one of us, everyone on earth and in heaven and knew, that he was their savior, they're only way into heaven. He died for us, some choose to live for him, some do not. Be one of the many on this earth who choose to awknowledge what greatness he did for you. How he saved you from eternity in hell. Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. Rethink.

A cult, by definition, is a religious organization. So technically, Christianity is a cult.
Christianity started out as a sect of Judaism; it was made up of people who thought that Jesus was their messiah. It is a combination of Jewish beliefs and Zoroastrianism. A few hundred years later, the Christian Bible is put together. The church splits between the Holy Roman Empire and Eastern Orthodoxy. There are also the Copts in Egypt. Fast forward about a thousand years, and there's the Protestant Reformation. All this while the religion is changing, the core beliefs are changing, and those who have access to texts is changing as well. Another 500 years brings us up to now with more splits, and more changes.
For the most part of Christianity it was held that God predetermined who went to heaven and who didn't. The only debate was about when this was decided: before or after the fall. Sometimes it was though that bread literally turned into Jesus' body, and sometimes it wasn't. (Laity usually never received the "blood" out of the fear of it dripping!) Universals and so forth, even though based on ancient philosophy, have permeated Christianity.
Holidays were ripped off from the Pagans. Christmas is over the Winter Solstice, Easter is over Ostara, and so forth.

I used to belong to the Christian faith but when I would ask questions I wouldn't get any answers beyond "the Bible tells us so". I also tired of hearing it was the "only way" and the bashing of other faiths and ideas. I know there are good Christian people but I think I liked being able to think for myself. I now go to a Unitarian church where ALL thoughts and beliefs are respected. Not everyone agrees but we are mindful of others. We're inclusive of gays, lesbians and trans-genered folks as well. I think any religion can become a cult. It just depends on the leaders and followers. And probably the worst part of it for me was the constant "witnessing" we were being asked to do. I do not think it's right to push ANY religion on anyone else. If they want to seek it out, there's plenty of info to do so.

I believe that Christianity, like all religions is a valid spiritual path. When practiced in the way that it was intended to be (as opposed to the way that man corrupts and interprets it). I think it promotes a lot of great standards to live by. However, there are many Christians in this world (and on Y!Answers) who are judgemental and intolerant of others' beliefs. Those are the ones that make Christianity look like a bad thing. They need to take a look at their own religious texts and re-learn what it actually means to be 'Christ-like'.
To all of those (seemingly few) Christians out there, who are tolerant, loving, and accepting of others regardless of their belief system, congratulations. I wish there were more like you!
Blessings and Light!

In a sense all religions can be considered as a 'cult', everyone of them. Cult is derive from Latin meaning care or adoration, a religious movement that has a set of belief system and rituals, which all religions do have that. Yet, it common usage has the connotation to be offensive, as one being controlled by that certain sect, as is the case with all religion. A cult is system where one must have great devotion to a person as in one GOD/ ALLAH, idea the relation itself, the movement etc. A system which purpose to be the cure, the solution to all people's problems. A system which has a set of ritual and beliefs, such as hajj, prayers, jihad etc. From that cult means all religion.
In my own point of view, a religion is what you make of it. You are provided with a book of faith, and how you apply what is in it in your life, determine the greatness of what you translate into it. Religion has been translated, analyzed to death by many, to find out what it means to you. And how you see it, is what the outcome will be. To me Christianity means to Love one another, and to do the best one can do to live a righteous life, and try never to harm anyone. Christianity doen't teach it people that jihad is their rights, and they must convert and conqure the world into one religion. It teaches love and respect.

All religions are Cults...each and every one. There is no proof of Jesus or any other magical man...it was all created to control the masses and that it has done.
Those who manage to take the blindfolds off live a far better and happier life without worrying about dogma or control at every turn.
Free yourself...THINK.

it's a plague. not a cult per se, but it demonstrably employs cult like methods of mind control in varying degrees from sect to sect.
many of them want to infect public policy with their dogma. they want to infect public schools and places of business. they prey upon the weak and vulnerable and tell them how they can take all of their pain away. then comes the bait an switch - god will take away your pain, but you have to believe exactly as well tell you or you're going to hell!
now, some xians really understand the live and let live, treat others as you want to be treated. no problem. some, perhaps many, do not want to legislate their religious beliefs. again, no problem.
some xians do not even believe that jesus was perfect, or the son of god, or that he rose from the dead. some do ot believe the bible is the literal, inerrant word of god. no problem there, either.

Christianity, like all group based religions, is a means of escaping the effort of thinking for yourself.
If there is a God out there, He meant for us to have indiviual relationships with Him/Her/It.
A good test for sounding out the viability of a church: If someone else is benefitting in any way from your personal belief, then it is a cult.

I think that it is misunderstood by it's followers. I am agnostic and I have read the Bible. It seems to me that Jesus did not believe in organized religion, if he did then he would have just improved upon the one that he was born too, Judaism. Christianity was developed after the death of Jesus, and with out his say so. Just seems a bit hypocritical to me. But you can't tell the followers that, they get offended.

Christianity is a religion that's based on fear, it seems to do more harm than good. Yes it's a cult but by definition all religions are.

I'm Pagan, but I think Christianity is a perfectly acceptable religion. I am OK with people being whatever religion they want to be. The only thing that bothers me is when Christians start getting all mad at Pagans for being Pagans and they try to push their religion onto us. LOL!
