I would wonder if you are all gone so much that there would be no time to properly train and spend the time you need with a new dog. Im sure your dog is ok while your gone and not as lonely as you think.

How long are you gone for?? If the dog is left home for more than 4 hours regularly, then someone should be coming in to walk the dog or it should be put in doggie day care. Toy dogs are social people dogs, not dogs that should be left home alone all day. Work & school schedules should have seriously been considered before getting this dog. A second one may help, but it may not. If you get another one from a disreputable breeder, then you may be stuck with 2 unhappy dogs, which doesn't help anyone.

We got fostered a second dog as a companion for our dog and it was terrible, but every family has a different situation. Our dog lost her personality and the other dog took over and became extremely alpha. We were thrilled when the dog found another home.

Be sure that your dog has plenty of 'you' time. If you are just gone in the morning, then the dog may simply sleep all morning and not really realize you are gone. Leave him toys and when you get home, make time each and every day to spend with him.

Your family also needs to start planning what will happen should you or your sister decide to take up sports, or after school activities, or work after school. If no one can be home for 8 - 10 hours, this is not fair to your dog. A second dog won't cure this. Having someone care for the dog during the day will be virtually mandatory or you will be asking for health problems, soiling issues, and behaviour issues.

Your family also needs to start planning what will happen when college rolls around. Unless you & your sister are very young, your dog will live past you leaving for college. Toy breeds can easily live 12-15 years. Who will take care of him when you are both gone away, or at college all day? Again, a second dog will not cure this and are you going to want to deal with 2 dogs at that point? Sitting or day care for two dogs is obviously more expensive than for 1 dog.

Good luck to you and I wish I had better answers for you! : )

After my husband died, I got another dog to keep my dog company while I was at work. Although they got along, they never totally bonded and got really close. They were fine together and never fought, but they never curled up together, either. I don't think it's necessary for all dogs to have pals. I'm not sure this answers your question, but your dog may be just fine all by himself.
