I always ask them to wait, and put them on hold. I never get back to them, so they stay on the phone until they hang up. This keeps them from making any more calls to other people.
Once, a telemarketer stayed on for almost 45 minutes... I let her off the hook and told her that I am not planning on picking up the phone. She was nice about it, at least.

Cute - but I just ask if they can hold for a minute and go do something for about an hour - and they are gone when I come back!@

Not very creative, I usually just hand the phone to my two year old and let them blab to them untill they hang up.
