Excerpted from a vet's page about puppy care: "Don't give your puppy anything small enough to swallow that can't be digested, or things that can be chewed into large indigestible chunks and swallowed.
Chicken bones, rib bones, and pork bones are the most likely to cause trouble. Old gooey rawhide chews or bones from the butcher that have been around for a few days get rotten and stinky and cause diarrhea. If you give things like this (not really a good idea), use good sense. Bones should be too large to swallow and solid enough that they won't be broken up into smaller chunks. Hooves, pig's ears, and miscellaneous semi-digestible treats probably aren't a good idea either, but if you use them be sure they are too large to be swallowed whole, or small enough to go all the way through.
Instead, we suggest using flavored Nylabone or Nylafloss chew toys. If your puppy first learns to prefer bones and rawhide, he probably won't think chew toys are all that great, so use them from the beginning. Nylafloss looks like a big thick chunk of nylon rope. Puppies like it because they can really sink their teeth into the rope, and it helps keep the teeth clean."
Enjoy your puppy! :-)

Between 3-6 months your puppy will be teething, and will chew on anything to help reliever the discomfort. Puppy bones are ok, but there ae options. Frozen chicken broth is good if you see a tooth (which you probably won't, since they tend to swallow them), natural rawhide bones are good, pig ears, cow hooves, all work. Nothing that's shaped like shoes, unless you're looking to suppliment your current wardrobe. Take an old piece of rope, and tie it into knots, for a cheap tug and chew toy. You can wet it and throw it into the freezer for a while too.

NO!!!! They can splinter and cause your puppy to choke! The sharp edges can also tear your dogs stomach and intestines equaling to a very large vet bill. ESPECIALLY FOR A PUPPY who doesn't have all adult teeth yet. Best to let him stick with a chew toy, rawhide or greenies. I've been giving my lab greenies every day (always under supervision) and the vet said they are wonderful for digestion and for helping keep teeth clean. We've never seen a dog come in for choking on a greenie! Rawhides pose the same risk a greenie does. I have however seen many a dog come in with complications due to an owner giving him a bone to chew on. BAD IDEA!!!

Are you talking about bones that come from meat or dog chew bones?
If you are talking about bones that come from meat then No go to the dog food section of the store and pick out a chew bone of some sort they are made for dogs and won't splinter and cause harm to the dog like a real bone.
My dogs like Greenies you can by them from the vet or on line (I'm not sure about pet stores?).

I have a 8 month old retriever and was told not to give him any kind of bones to chew. Now that he is eight months I do give him Pig ears only. I also think you might want to wait until you pup gets a little older .

NO, the teeth are not ready to be chewing hard bones. Do Not use rawhide, and Nylabones can splinter. Wait until the dogs is a little older. A solid rubber toy that is hard is safe, and not going to hurt them.

not the big bones, but you can give them rawhide chews where the rawhide is sorta shredded instead of solid. It's easier for them to chew and comes in all sizes at pet stores. Nylabones are great if you dont want crumbs everywhere, but some dogs don't like them.

i have two labs and gave them both bones to chew when they were that age. if you are talking about animal bones then i would wait until they are 6 months old. and never give you dog chicken or turkey or rib bones. they are too sharp and can hurt them. i used to work in a restaurant and would bring t-bones home to them all the time. rawhides are fine at that age.
