Barber shops deal mostly with cutting men's hair, salons do everything from cutting to perming

there used to be a big difference - one for men and the other for women but today they can both be for both. I know women who go to barbers for the shorter haircuts and men who go to beauty salons for hair color/foils, etc. Probably older people stick to the old rules, barbers for men, etc.

about $50 per cut and a lot of style!! :) If you just need a trim and are a man I would say "Go to the barber" but if you are a woman and dont know exactly what you are looking for, I would say "Go to a stylist"

YOU HAD ALL GOOD ANSWERS, DON'T KNOW IF I CAN ADD TO THEM. BEFORE THE BEATLES [PRIOR TO 1963-'64] MEN &BOYS WENT TO BARBER SHOPS WHERE THERE WAS A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE BACK OF THE NECK. TODAY EVERY HAIRLINE [MEN,WOMEN;BOYS;AND GIRLS] IS THE SAME- EITHER ROUNDED OR SQUARED.
